Awesome collection and binding
Fantagraphics has been issuing these sets for some time. They start with 1950 and will end with 2000 I believe they have up to 1990 already out, with each book covering two years of strips along with the forwards by known celebrities talking about how they either knew Shultz or how they were inspired by him. There is a great sense of respect given towards both the artist and the material. They are presented in great fashion in a book that is both creatively packaged but in a strong collector's box that holds both hardcover books. this is a great collection and I advise everyone to purchase all the volumes and read them. They will touch your life and make you smile through the hardest of times (after my dad died the only thing that could pull me out of my depressing was Peanuts). This is a great collection that can be passed down through generations. The Peanuts gang never get old or boring. They are always in motion and always giving you something to smile at. Even the hardships seem endearing, it's something we can all relate to and something we can all enjoy. I love Peanuts so I can't really imagine anyone not at least liking the strip, but this was entertainment that never talked down to the reader, everyone was on equal footing. It appeals to everyone as it's about everyone. These characters are people we know, and people we grown to love. So do yourself a favor by purchasing these volumes....they are quality books at a nice price, and well what price can one really put on a smile?

The Beginning...
In my opinion this is the last of the truly good 'Peanuts' years. After this Schultz started to copy other success' of the time. Garfield and his love affair with lasagna mirrored by Snoopy and his love affair with cookies and the single panel gag sometimes reminiscent of 'The Far Side'. So this set for me is bittersweet. In these volumes are collected strips that I had cut out of the newspaper and glued into a scrapbook.Very funny years: 'Truffles' and the waterbed saga were ones that I remember very well from my youth. This could also be the beginning of the end of the longer stories too. I quit reading the funnies around 1980 and didn't pick them up again for a few years so I'm not sure when the strips started becoming one-liners.I sold my scrapbook to my great surprise at a comics shop in 1980 or thereabouts. Like many things I didn't give much thought about in my youth I now wish I had that fat old scrapbook still in my possession.
