Universally acclaimed Ambrose Bierce...
Universally acclaimed as one of the Great American masters of classic ghost and horror stories. Born in 1842(Ohio) worked as a printers devil on a small Indiana newspaper, and served with the 9th Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War, seeing action at Shiloh and Chickamuga among other battles. He disappeared on a trip to Mexico in 1913, while the country was in the misdt of the revolution led by Pancho Villa. The circumstances of Bierce's death have never been known, but it is thought that he was killed during the siege of Ojinaga in January 1914. If this alone does not intrigue you enough to buy it, then be prepared to be possessed with the macabre, as Ambrose purely was. A must if you like ghost and horror stories, a compelling, suspenseful read.

" It is a quite pessimistic view of life after death but a great story anyway
The title story, The Moonlit Road, is a classic in the horror family of books. And what a tale it is! Filled with infidelity and suspicion about the loyalty of an innocent wife which leads to murder, it even contains a horror within a horror (What was the creature that came to the woman's chamber before the husband arrived?) Even the villainous husband says "To this day I don't think it was human." It is a quite pessimistic view of life after death but a great story anyway. All of the short stories in this book are worth reading. I recommend it highly to the fans of horror literature.

"Beyond the Wall" was my favorite in this collection; wish they all were a bit better
Reminds me a bit of Poe, and I was hoping to enjoy these stories more than I did. The stories are not great, nor are they bad; I just wish they were better. I doubt I will go back and re-read them someday, like I've done many, many times with Poe. I give the collection 3.4 stars, which rounds down to 3.
