No. Gaff tape is not waterproof. Its made of a cloth back and an adhesive layer that is water permeable.

For those of you who have used this tape on glass surfaces and in the sun, how does it hold up? I need to tape a wire to the windshield of my car.

If the wire is inside the car ... give Pro-Gaff tape a try. I used Pro Gaff to tape a complex, temporary aluminum support for a Garmin Navigator on the left on my Wife's dashboard. Since the aluminum was shiny, I additionally taped over the aluminum where the sun shines. Matte finish worked great. When I ripped it out after our vacation, no residue was left. If the wire is outside ... NO! use Gorilla masking tape. ... By the way, tonight I saw this very brand of tape being used to set up the music stage for Super Bowl XLIX. I have a selfie to prove it!

If I use this tape to secure my focus on a long telephoto zoom during the eclipse will this tape hold up to the heat or would painters' tape be better

This gaffers tape won't release in the heat, but extended use in high heat can cause the adhesive to to leave a residue. I would think that on metal / plastic, you should be fine for a couple of hours even in 100 degree heat. I've had problems with residue where the tape has been outside for 6 days of 90-105 degree heat. I can't compare that to painters tape, as I've never tried to use that outdoors in high heat.
