Question 1

The 32GB hard drive throws me... after installed software, is there any space to save files?  This seems incredibly small, no?

WARNING  With just Windows 10, Firefox and Thunderbird e-mail installed, there is not enough room left on the hard drive for Windows 10 updates.  We get constant warnings and reminders, but I can't see a way out of this problem.   There is 27.8 Gb total space (on a 32Gb drive), and just 7.6Gb free space.  Apparently Windows update needs more than that.  Once I reformat and install Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop, this should be a great little computer for my wife.   I have used Linux on my "big" computer for a  year, and love it!  You do need to be comfortable with command line entry to take full advantage of Linux.

How many GBs does this have? And is it better to have this or a MacBook Air better for school

A MacBook Air is a $1k laptop and this one is $200. The Mac might not be 5 times better but it's definitely better. If someone else is paying for it definitely go with the Mac.

This has a 32 GB hard drive (eMMC) and as such is essentially a chromebook with Windows installed on it. It has less storage space than my cell phone. For school you'll need to store all your documents in the cloud or else use a large microSD or USB drive. Unless you can install programs onto the external drives, you'll be able to install very few extra programs even with all your data on the cloud. Hopefully Windows 10 apps are optimized to take up a minimal amount of hard drive space, but most windows programs are not.

Is this a good laptop

For the price I think it's an amazing little laptop.  My daughter loves it and it functions flawlessly.  It's made entirely of plastic so it probably isn't as durable as some, but for $200 what do you want?!   It runs Windows 10 really well, boots up fast and works great.  It's pretty quick too, but I wouldn't be running things like Photoshop or Lightroom on it . . . . . Just one tip . . . . . it has very little hard drive space, so I put a 64GB Micro SD card in the card slot and left it there.  I have everything set up to save to the card so it's not using any more HD space.  It also came with a free year of Microsoft Office 365 . . . . I had problems activating that and even Microsoft customer service couldn't figure out how I was supposed to redeem the offer.   For me that was a minor inconvenience because I have a business subscription to Office 365 that allows me to put it on up to 5 PC's, so I just set it up with that.  But for anyone who may need that freebie, it might be a bit of a challenge.  I'm sure there must be a way around it.  Other than that I'm VERY happy with this purchase.

It might have been a one-year trial at some point, but mine is only 6 mos. Which is fine, I loathe Office and uninstalled it.
