Desert Dwelling Toast Lovers Rejoice!
I live in the HOT Arizona Desert. Even with Air Conditioning you simply cannot leave butter out on the counter....You can now ;)1.Solid Construction2.Very Easy to 'fill' - watch the product video - so easy!3.Saves Money - ( no more wasted 'melt' when the soften setting on your microwave gets a bit picky or you forgot and left it "softening" on the counter too long and have to toss the rancid mess)4.Easy to Clean5. Does Exactly what it says it will do6. Water stays coolSo very glad I finally bit and bought this...my husband loves it too. Usage: Sits on the island where it gets indirect sun exposure from two windows (6 foot and 8 feet away from the windows). Refresh water once every 3 days even though you can go much longer than that. I fill per the instructions, making sure the butter is properly 'seated' around all sides - which for this model is just easy peasy and no utensils required! I do 'scrape' the sides occasionally from the top down during use ..have never had a problem with butter falling out - even when you can see the sides peaking thru - because it's been properly pressed into the dish at the filling stage so it stays at just the right temp to still stick to the sides and thus not fall out. Thus far have never 'refrigerated' the unit when not in use - have not needed to do anything but fill it, refresh the water every so often, and enjoy. The butter is never too soft (re never melting in the dish). The nice large base on the unit means no tipping when turned up for use (like I've read about some butter bells) and it makes for a nice large 'handle' when taking it off the base unit. Very nice for those with carpel, arthritis or other hand issues. This unit is very simply - Great! Butter Bay Cube-Shaped Butter Keeper, Made in USA, Pomegranate

White edging rough and unfinished with a sharp edge, not chipped, but like it was mis-made
I have updated and upgraded my review based on contact with the vendor after I left my first review. I did return the first butter bay, but was sent a second one. The second one is well made without the nick on top. I learned about the unglazed top being how they are all made, and that this butter keeper actually holds a stick of butter (1/2 cup) which is the norm. Even though the butter holding part looked small, sure enough, it easily held the stick of butter.Jim and I have a little quibble on our favorite. I actually find this butter bay the one I like best, I like the elongated handle and I find it easier to get the butter out of the oval shape. Jim likes the other one we tried better, a more straight up and down design. Our solution, keep and use both:) we both agree this is the more attractive of the two.I appreciate the manufacturers caring enough to reach out, however, I have to deduct a star because the first one I had did have issues. However, this one is lovely and works great, and is well made.*original review follows: ................Maybe I got a lemon, since most of the reviews are positive. In my case, while I love the idea and the color, the butter holding portion seems tiny. (although I'm told it's a stick of butter which is the norm for these butter holders.)Also, the white unfinished top is odd looking because the paint is uneven on the side, and the white part is rough. It also has a sharp edge like it was miscast, and gave me a good snag on my finger. I asked Jim if he could file it down, but we decided to just return it instead. The color is a gorgeous rich pomegranate. It's truly a shame it didn't work because it's mostly beautiful.

Very happy first time water-basin/butter keeper user - HIGHLY RECOMMEND
This was my first butter dish with a water basin. I will never go back to a "plate with a lid butter dish". The butter stayed fresh longer. I also really like that you can pick up the butter dish by the handle and leave the basin in it's place. And the handle is just so you can set it down on the table (upside down) and easily pick it up when you are done with the butter. Some complained about getting the butter into the basin... if you are lazy then go with the traditional plate/lid butter dish. If you are willing to take a few extra minutes to load it, it will be well worth it. They also have an instructional video. Personally, I buy the long, skinny butter and have the cut and then mash it into the basin. To make this easier, whenever the butter is low I pull a stick from the fridge and let it soften to room temperature for a day or so. Then completely was the butter dish with soap and water and load it up with a spatula. Viola! The only thing I noticed was if I do not change the water it molds on the outside of the butter dish... but NOT on the butter itself. In the instructional video they tell you to change the water every 3 days or so but I forget.Overall this is a great butter dish and if you are new to ones with a water basin it does take some getting used to but I would highly recommend it.

I liked the fact this is made in the U
I liked the fact this is made in the U.S.A.,like the concept, and like the color. Unfortunately, the first time I moved it on the table, it left two scratches - a big one and a smaller one. Checking the bottom, I found it to be unfinished, but the real problem is the two small, sharp projections along the bottom. See pictures.UPDATE: After a few months, I noticed a chip in the inner surface of the bottom container. This unit seems to have had a bad day at the kiln! However, in spite of these flaws, the Butter Bay functions as advertised and without the flaws I would give it a 4-5 Star rating. To those having negative experiences with the Butter Bay, please watch the explanatory video on the Amazon description page.
