ProtecLiberty Practice Trumpet Mute, Aluminum (ML201)

I love that my stepson has a passion for music and loves playing all sorts of instruments, but sometimes the volume can be an issue— especially with the trumpet.I bought this muter to help keep our sanity and it really helps. I am sure more expensive ones probably work better, but this muter makes his playing quiet enough that we can still enjoy watching tv one room over without having to turn it up much. I’m so glad I bought it for him so he can practice more often without it being overwhelming for the rest of us.

My daughter wanted a practice mute, I didn't want to spend a bunch of money. This practice mute was less than I thought I'd get stuck paying and works very well. My daughter does actually practice quite often in the house and outside in addition to concert band, full orchestra and musical pit practices multiple times per week. This mute allows her to practice in her room without disrupting everyone else's life in the house. We honestly hardly even notice she is playing. If you are on the fence I highly suggest going with this one.

Surprisingly good especially considering the affordable price. I owned, and own, many practice mutes, some two or three times more expensive than this one, and believe me... they are not worth the additional cost. This mute has a soft tone, still enough volume for you to hear what you play, but at the same time because the tone is not brittle it does not travel and nobody can hear you in another room or through a wall. Last but not least, it is quite open, with very acceptable back pressure, I would say just a tiny bit more thanthe back pressure of a Harmon mute. I had a couple of more expensive practice mutes that were more stuffy...Would I recommend it ? Absolutely. Is it the best practice mute on the market ? No I think that the Bremner SSShhh mute is better. But it costs twice the price, and it does not performs two times better :-)

When I first tried it I knew right away it wasn't what a straight mute should sound like. I made alterations to the mute and recorded the sound quality. It just has this muffled out-of-tune sound. I thought it would sound more like a straight mute, as it is advertised, but even for a silencer it does alter your tone in a bad funky way.

This mute performs as well as many other $15-$40 mutes so I'd say it's a very nice value. Airflow is pretty good and is about the same as playing with a Harmon mute. Volume is decent and I can practice without waking up my kid which is why I got this. Pitch is OK for the casual player since pitch is off and not consistent through all registers, but close enough for practice and close enough where I don't notice. I only know it's off because I pulled out my tuner for this review.The bottom line is if you want to be quieter with better flow get something like the Silent Brass, if you're looking for something less expensive this is a good option.

Why are people spending almost twice the amount at local music stores for the paper version of a mute? The metal are better and you can still buy it for less on Amazon then the music stores. Not sure why some may have issues with putting a mute inside their trumpet. Sometimes you just get an inferior item. Sometimes people over insert and compress the cork so much it will never work. If you have to push a mute in with brute force you are damaging the cork. If it falls out from the start return the item and try again. This mute is for High School band. It will not get a review based on a professionals opinion. My daughter has had no issues with it. I also played trumpet and can say this mute performs exactly like it should. Save some money and order it off Amazon!

Great for hushing up my horn for in-apartment playing and practicing. While it is generally not recommended to play with something with backpressure for long periods (it can mess with your embouchure), this works in a pinch. I do play almost exclusively with this mute in. Works best while playing low-mid range (up to top-staff G) and doing technical work.

This mute works great at silencing my trumpet. Now i can practice without waking up everyone in my house. This mute has great build quality for this price.

One of the difficulties of being a brass instrument player is finding a place and time where it is possible to practice the instrument without disturbing the entire household. A solution is the practice mute which contains sound-deadening material and makes life more bearable for the family. The Protec modest does a good job at a modest price.
