Steve McQueen and Lee Remick ignite sparks in this impassioned drama about a rootless drifter and the woman who loves him. Georgette Thomas (Remick) arrives with her small daughter in Columbus, Texas, to join her husband, Henry (McQueen), who has just been paroled from the state penitentiary. He'd been serving time for stabbing a man in a drunken brawl. His hopes pinned to a career as a songwriter, Henry returns to singing and playing guitar in bawdy roadhouses. Slim (Don Murray), a quiet-spoken deput sheriff, grows attached to Georgette and the child and does what he can to keep the volatile Henry in line. But, when Henry's tantrums become increasingly more violent, Slim is forced to stop him, bringing the film to a shattering climax.

Worth the price.
I used this video for our personal entertainment. When I purchased this video, the seller stated that it was "like new". While watching, I would have thought it was new.

A moody film about effects of child abuse (with some unfortunate cuts)
Performances are all solid with Remick particualry lovely. Disturbing element of child abuse is at the film's core, but there are no flashbacks, only the torment in Henry's face and guilty looks from those who allowed it to continue. If the film were made today we would see the young Henry being physically and/or sexually abused by Kate. However, it is the inevitable after-effects of the violence perpetrated on the child that fester and emerge in the adult that is important here. There is its disturbing theme but the audience must be willing to supply some parts of the puzzle and not sit back, waiting to have it thrown into their laps.Still, there also seems to be some unfortunate cuts regarding the character of Slim (Don Murray).SPOILER AHEAD ---As Henry is running for the truck, Slim is chasing, close behind. When Henry can't grab the rear of the truck for his escape, he tumbles to the ground, but although the camera lingers on Henry, there is no sign of Slim, who was right there. It feels like the cut of a scene between these two characters with Henry asking his old friend to take care of his wife and little girl. Next scene cuts to the house, and Slim is helping Georgette and the girl into his car and driving them off to another town. Was there a scene in the house between Slim and Georgette? I suppose we can think that there is a possibility for Slim and Georgette. However, as it stands now, that idea would be a giant leap. There are some additional, unfortunate edits, again in solving the character of Slim. Nevertheless, it is an effective tale, and even more pertinent today with a 21st century awareness. Yes, the film is "deliberately paced", but it is beautifully filmed in black and white, and the story is a haunting one. It deserved a better fate.

Script So So, But Still Worth the Watch
I liked this movie! I don't think it got great reviews at the time it came out and I guess some people don't like it now. I can see that it was not exactly Oscar material, but a very good story, nonetheless. OK, there are some holes in the script, but overall, the story and performances of all the major players are strong, yet sensitive. And I just enjoyed watching Steve McQueen his blue jeans. He was a very good looking guy with a killer body. And I don't care if his lip-synced performance of the title song is sort of awkward...I think he did his best (but probably never did anything like that again.) And then lovely Lee Remick gave it her best too, but I have to say, the chemistry between her with her sensitive and intelligent classiness and McQueen's brashness didn't make for the best on-screen chemistry. A good Saturday afternoon watch when you're in a 50's/60's retro mood.

WORST lip synching I've ever seen
I hated watching Steve McQueen "sing" in his "string band" while watching this movie, it was painful. The voice didn't match up, his lip movements are exaggerated and ill-timed. Nevertheless, this is Steve at his physical prime, he's damn cute in this movie. Lee Remick carries her role very well and so does little Kimberly Block as the daughter. There are some surprises in the movie, some of the things Steve's character does bring out the "holy crap" reaction that a good plot evinces. It's too bad they had to spotlight that damn singing!

UNFULLING STORY THAT MISSES ITS POTENTIAL
Steve McQueen as the moves as a very talented singer in BABY THE RAIN MUST FALL. It isn't Steve's singing voice but he sure has the moves.Henry Thomas (McQueen) has just been paroled from prison and his wife Georgette (The ever lovely Lee Remick) travels with their young daughter to finally be a family again. Henry is willing to work hard to support his family but he still wants to perform with his "string band" and he is amazingly talented. The mysterious Miss Kate, an elderly woman who raised the orphaned Henry stands in his way.BABY THE RAIN MUST FALL misses the mark as story about relationships. Henry and Georgette are trying to build a life together but Henry must play by Miss Kate's rules. Why does Miss Kate have this magical hold over him? He's is treatened with being returned to prison if he does not go to night school to learn a trade rather than perform with his band. It is all so confusing and a potentionally interesting story is ruined. Remick is a standout as the long suffering yet loving mother and wife who will do anything for her family. Don Murray is the local police deputy who grew up with Henry and wants to see the Thomas family thrive. It's a good cast in a mediocre movie. The ending is a disappointing let-down. So much potential is missed.

Musical McQueen
I was surprised at the great job McQueen did with this role. He actually had a nice singing voice & learned just enough to make it look as if he was in control of the instrument. Surprisingly or rather not surprising the critics were not thst kind to him. After reading his autobiography & learning what a terrible life he led he turned into the mega star must actors want to achieve & at one time was the highest paid actor of all time. He plays this role well but was not particularly overjoyed with it.He turned down some outstanding films & one cannot figure out why since he did it all so well. He is suave, charming.and the most polite actor on the screen. Writers do not "write in" politeness but he always showed respect & affection. Perhaps this was because he did not receive it himself growing up. My heart ached for him to read about that awful childhood & maybe that is why he was who he was! This DVD can be obtained through AMAZON so give it a try.
