Fantastic
I am a great fan of Douglas Adams, and it always makes me very sad that he did not live long enough to give us more of his work. I scarcely need to say what has already been said thousands of times; quirky, intelligent, witty, delicately balanced. Adams was one of the very best writers of the modern age, and it is a great shame that he hated deadlines so much and thus produced so little.Every line Adams wrote, I have found to be worth reading.

Pretty Good
After the first book in the series which was weird in my opinion I started reading this reluctantly. However, I soon got into it as the story turned out as daft as the Hitchhiker's stories. Glad I tried the book.

Funniest ending to a book ever!!
It starts off a little slow and the involment of the the norse gods is a little confusing. But this just adds to it and as the book goes on it just gets more and more bizzare and soon you'll be thinking a de-bodyed head revolving on a record player is a relativity normal occurrance.(from the book not personal experience before there is a police equiery)some of Douglas Adams other books have weak endings, but the ending of this book was so funny it made the hours of reading it all worth it and is defiantly better than the ending ton the first Dirk Gentry book.I highly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have anything against Thor god of thunder.PS- Zen Navigating(which dirk gentry uses) is the best idea ever! I used it and found the toilets! wont need a map again.

His masterpiece
Quite simply brilliant. Reading this again for the first time in 10+ years. Better than ever. No book has ever been better than this.PS anyone mentioning the TV series will be placed into suspended animation until lemon-soaked paper napkins are available. It’s dross and bears NO relation to the books. If Adams were alive today he’d be spinning in his grave. Shame Amazon doesn’t allow comments on reviews any more or I’d have some choice things to say, I can tell you.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency Part 2
I enjoyed it, having read "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency". Dirk Gently's character is further revealed, but the principal thread of the novel is centred around a female protagonist. There are some excellent moments of typical Adams wit and whimsy, but I found it a little less rewarding than the first of the two Dirk Gently novels. It is definitely not a good starting point, but as a follow-on, Douglas Adams aficionados will not want to miss the experience.

For the fans (pt. 2)
In this book we follow Dirk Gently on another crazy adventure. This is the second book in the series, the first being Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. I'd recommend to read the books in the correct order (I think the character introduction of Dirk Gently is better in the first book). Also, the story here seems to me to be a bit more complex than the first one.If it's your first book from this author, don't take this one. Then the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy is the one you want (witch is also a series consisting of 5 books). If, after reading that, you've become a fan, then the Dirk Gently-series is definitely for you!

The Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul
A wonderfull book and a joy from start to end, having finally gotten round to the first book I had been looking forward to devouring this for some time and is did not disapoint. Dirk himself appears a lot earlier this time and his misadventures from supposed red herring to supposed red herring to alarmingly find everything is connected after all is a joy to behold. As with the first book the ending isnt easily spelt out and requires the reader to have a bit of a think at the end.

Dark Gently sequel review
The first Dirk Gently novel is closer to pure Science-Fiction all be it with some humour added. This novel is about the Norse gods and has lots more hunour. Thor is portrayed as a bad tempered blundering oath who despite this is a good intended God. It’s an enjoyable read, different in tone and content to the first novel.

like a lot of nerdy people in their late 30s
I was describing the Dirk Gently books to a friend and emphasized that they didn't rely on supernatural things and then had to back track since the first book involves time travel and aliens and this book involves literal acts of god(s). The books are so grounded in the real, in specific places and times, and have such ordinary and well rounded characters that the time travel and aliens and gods and interdimensional travel and everything else just seems normal. Inconvenient but normal. So flight delays, massive eagles swooping down on people, pizza places that refuse to deliver, demonic contracts, defective telephone lines, missing cats, and men channeling dustin hoffman all seem on the same level. It's a tremendous bit of skillful writing that many other authors and wannabe authors imitate poorly. For me, like a lot of nerdy people in their late 30s, reading a Douglas Adams book is like slipping into your favorite pair of pajamas. It's a cozy comfortable familiar fit you can relax into. For most of us we haven't actually READ Adams in years. The Gently books hold up very well. They're witty without being cloying or "wacky" and Adams manages to write a book that doesn't center a confused, passive, out of his depths but gamely going along with it male character. Instead we have Kate Schecter, a reporter who's foiled in her attempt to join (or just miss) her emotionally and physically absent boyfriend. She takes an active role in investigating what's going on. We also have Dirk Gently, the holistic investigator, whose philosophy that all things are interconnected leads him down some very interesting (but, alas, rarely lucrative) paths. He, also, takes an active role in investigating what's going on, including negotiation with gods and advertising executives. It's a nice change of pace. The plot also feels less like a recycled Doctor Who script and more original. One could probably jump right into this book without having read the previous, but "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" is very worth reading in its own right. It's great when a cherished book holds up over the years.I wish the tv shows were better.
