Followed her blog for years, Glad to have the book!
We are SLOWLY becoming vegetarian. And long ago, Shmoo and this blog gave me hope. I started reading her blog BEFORE I was married, BEFORE I had kids, that's how good her recipes are. Her vegan peanut butter and jelly muffins are a staple in our house, because they're GOOD. They're not "good" for a vegan recipe; they're just plain delicious. And I don't even LIKE peanut butter!Full of fun, delicious and cool recipes, and nothing too "out there" that a normal kid wouldn't eat.A great use of money.

Simple and great!
I am not vegan. My step daughters decided to be vegan because their mom did. The girls spend half their time with me. I found the diet confusing and limiting. I am an all organic veggies, grass fed beef kinda girl who loves to cook. I bought this book out of my own frustration learning what to prepare for them, and found this cookbook made my life so much easier and much much less frustrating. It gives several easy to put together recipes that help cut down the soy intake in most vegan diets. I found myself eating a lot of the meals, surprisingly. The amount of meal ideas, and how simple it is to prepare them really helped a lot. Highly recommended, vegan or not.

The book is not like the blog...
I just received my copy of Vegan Lunch Box after much anticipation. I was a fan of the blog that inspired the book and for some reason expected the format of the book to be similar, which is what appealed to me. Unfortunately, the entire book is laid out in a new way.First of all, there are virtually no pictures (save for a special insert in the middle of the book), and none to accompany the recipes. There are very few set "menus" except in sections for special occasions and a few to kick off your thinking. The recipes are divided into apps, salads, soups, sandwiches, main courses, sides, breads, desserts and beverages, which is useful, though there are a few stand-by recipes in here I think she could have skipped for most of us- veggie dogs and baked beans for example, takes up an entire page. The recipes go perhaps a bit beyond lunch- I won't be making soups or homemade beverages for my child's lunch box- but that's ok, it makes it a bit more versatile as a book for veggie families. What I found helpful about the original blog was the creativity of how Jennifer, the author, put the meals together in the bento lunchboxes she created. The combinations of food items and what her child choose to eat and appreciated. It's not the recipes I struggle with, it's how to put together an appealing lunch for a vegetarian child (and one that her classmates will envy!).That said, this is a useful book and a must have for parents to new vegetarians, and does have plenty to offer the veteran as well. I just wish they had followed the format of the blog a little bit more closely. The book does mention that all the original recipes are on the blog archive- but that's why I purchased the book, so I could have that information in a book format.

Great resource for mums
I was dying to get this book after being a fan of her blog for so long. It's got great menu plans - ones for mornings you have time to cook, ones for a rushed morning and ones for preparation the night before. It has great recipes, a little too much fake meat and processed food for my taste - but then it's written for everyone, not just me :)My only criticism (and that's why it lost a star) is the lack of photos. The beauty of the blog was the photo of each lunch, I was expecting this in the book too but there's just a few photos together in the middle of the book - 99% of the recipes and menus don't have photos which is sadly quite common with vegan cookbooks. But this book is WELL worth the price and will truly be USED in a household with kids. Just give us some photos!

A must-have for raising a healthy and adventurous eater
I love this book!It has awesome ideas that help me with planning for all of my family's meals, not just lunch. And this book is a nice companion to my new Laptop Lunch investment!I am not a vegan, but this book has so many yummy recipes that it made me realize that it is not all that difficult to be one.I am also a huge fan of good sauces and this book had a couple of new ones that I haven't tried before.

unrealistic for regular moms
I purchased the book in hopes to create a little variety for my children. My son was attending a Jewish day school and could not have meat of any kind in his lunch. I knew that he would soon become tired of the tuna sandwich, tomato soup, cheese and mayo rotation. This book is completely unrealistic. I needed inspiration and alternative lunch ideas. As a working mom I was not going to plan lunches days in advance and as elaborately as this book depicts. Most of the recipes have 7 to 15 ingredients including soups, imitation sushi, dips, burgers, pancakes etc. Also, many of the recipes include nuts which are banned by more and more schools each year due to allergies. My children are no strangers to veggies, but common! raw beets? broccoli fennel soup? My kids will eat that stuff but certainly not without me standing over them counting out the bites until they can leave the table. I needed real lunches that real kids will actually eat, on their own, without hating me. The truth is we're up against, school pizza, chicken nuggets and lunchables. That's what they are sitting across from at the lunch tables and sadly collard greens isnt going to cut it! The recipes are good but time consuming. I am scouting out a few for dinners, but certainly not for my childs lunchbox. Its just not realistic.

Very happy with this book
This book is wonderfully put together, so happy I got it! It has fun meal themes for different times of the year and a bunch of recipes I never would have considered to pack as a lunch for my kid. We took them for a practice run before my daughter starts Kindergarten and shes totally devoured most of them! Even has suggestions on meal plans and side notes on things like portion sizes and lunch containers.

Better than expected
I've been looking at this book for quite a while but had heard various feedback and was unsure about buying it, so when I finally got around to it I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd been struggling with lunch ideas and really needed some help!In the end I'm really glad I brought this, it is very much aimed at children but most of the ideas and lunch menus are easily transferable. I'd say I'd use about half the ideas in the book which isn't bad going really. Really adds some variety to lunchtimes, is just ashame as an advocate of vegan diets the author no longer seems to be vegan.
