I'm not sure but if you go online and put in ironing board covers, where you bought the board it should say.

Q: Is metal part in the back to hold the iron?

Yes, that holds your iron. Nice to have a place to put the hot iron.

Q: I prefer a steel top ironing board. This one looks to be made of plastic. Can a steam iron be used on this ironing board?

I really like this ironing board. I don't have a lot that needs ironing. The pad (cover ) is thick. I have used the steam iron and have not had any issues with it. I would recommend.
