The lock is worth the extra cost.
I'm a professional furniture maker and I also teach woodwork to adults. I've been using profile gauges to teach scribing for years. The ones I used didn't have locks and I resisted buying one because I felt I didn't need it. I finally gave in and it was worth it. No matter how careful you are it just makes the whole process easier to fix the teeth in place. A worthwhile spend.

A solid tool to assist, but still needs careful hand
It makes the job easier, for sure. The pins are thin enough to give you a good measure of recesses and notches in doorframes, and the locking mechanism is pretty firm.However the lock could be improved. When it is applied, it compresses the pins together and there is some flexion. So it distorts to a minor degree and you lose some preciseness. It is certainly still a very useful tool and this wouldn't put me off buying again.
