Fantastic
Isabelle has done it again. I love her style of writing and she has a knack of drawing you in from the very first page. Engaging, descriptive characters who you can really identify with. This is perfect escapism and you really can feel the heat of the sun as you read about the beautiful scenery of a Croatian island, the waves gently lapping on the shore. We first meet Kate following her rather eventful 30th birthday party when she is broken hearted and sets off to sunnier climes to lick her wounds and start to rebuild her shattered dreams.I enjoyed the easy banter between Kate and Alex and her brother Toby and his Italian husband Filippo, while picking up some handy interior design tips as Katehelps to prepare her brother's hostel for openingVivid descriptions of flash yachts, pebble beaches, breakfasting outside, the abundance of lavender, the contrast buzz of crickets and even a trip to the Tisak supermarket brought back many happy memories of my own trip to Hvar in October 2019 and I truly felt like I'd been on holiday myself. I even dreamed about Hvar last night!Without giving too much away this is a ovely story of finding yourself, being kind and learning to love yourself again and comes very highly recommended.Isabelle really should be on the payroll of many a tourist destination as her fantastic depictions would no doubt swell bookings.

I could feel the sun on my back!
I’ve never been to Croatia, but The Getaway certainly took me there. I could feel the warmth of the sun on my back, the sand between my toes & I absolutely wished I could view those sunsets! After Kate’s life as she knows it falls apart, she decides to go to stay with her brother in Hvar for a while to regain some perspective. Whilst there, she certainly does have a life overhaul, but she cannot run from her problems back home, until she decides to deal with them head on.The Getaway appealed to that little piece of me that wants to pack a bag when the going gets tough & do a little runner to somewhere where noone knows me. Atmospheric, true to life, & made me want to jump on a plane (even if we can’t right now!). Recommend!

Wonderful overview of Croatia!
I love Isabelle Broom's books as the locations are so amazing. I know Croatia is beautiful as I have been there 3 times. I've just purchased another of her books which is in Lisbon this time, which should be interesting!

Hooked me from the start
It’s not often these days that a book hooks me in to the point that I disappear from the chaos of family life, but with The Getaway I frequently found myself sitting on my bed reading. I fell in love with the main characters (not James) and Croatia. The description of the setting made me determined to visit all of the places named. The storyline was written with great thought and was very relatable. How often, when life gets tough, do we wish we could just get on a plane and escape? I know I have and especially so over the last year or so. Isabelle Broom deals so sensitively with the mental health of the characters in the book and I learnt some fantastic coping mechanisms that I’m going to try. There was so much to love about this book from the characters, the setting, the mindfulness of it and the interior design that I’m really hoping Netflix or Amazon buy the film rights. Loved every page .
