Digital code only in UK???
My boys love this movie, but when I bought this DVD for the digital download my intentions were to use this on a road trip ride. I used the code and it is only for the United Kingdom. Rip off. I want a new DVD with an American code.

A Big Step Down
I was like looking forward to this film as I am a huge fan of the original. However this is not a patch on the first. The story is muddled and some of the acting isn’t particularly good the film score also is nowhere near as good as the original. On the even though I’m not keen on how nimble the new jaegers are the visuals are pretty impressive and the Gypsy Avenger vs Obsidian Fury battles were quite good. In closing not what I was hoping for but ok to just pop in and switch off for a couple of hours. Good if your a big fighting mech fan.

Return of the Kaiju
A sequel to the 2013 movie 'Pacific Rim'. Which saw humans in big robot suits called Jaegers fighting Kaijus, which were monsters from another dimension that came through a rift between that one and ours. The original did big box office in one particular part of the world. Thus a sequel was demanded by the money men.Original director Guillermo Del Toro produces this one rather than directs. This is set ten years on from the original, but anyone who didn't see that could get into this reasonably easily, thanks to some opening exposition which fills in the details. This bit is narrated by lead character Jake Pentecost [John Boyega] son of Idris Elba's character the original. A character who is not his father, as he tells us.The next scene shows this. He's one of those characters who is rebelling against following in his father's footsteps, and off doing his own thing.Said scene does a very good job of world building, showing us life ten years on from the original in a world that hasn't quite recovered from it yet.It then goes into a cliched run away from bad guys you've wronged scene. Then he meets a teenage street girl who is also a brilliant mechanic. Which also feels very cliched. All of which follows veers from cliched and dull into occasionally emotional and interesting. So your attention might wander. Both find themselves - after a scene with one great line which you will want to use on people - back in the services, along with a guy who is strait laced and thus hates Jake's attitude. Cliché again.Amongst the other cadets is one who worked hard to get there on her own merit, and thus hates teenage girl for getting an easy chance. Cliché! Although she is the only one of those characters who gets anything much to do.And street girl gets settled quickly because she's a fan of the whole thing. Which does work quite well.Throw in two eccentric nerdy scientists from the original, and an Asian tech mogul. Also feel very familiar. It continues in this vein, but it is doing some plot set up.And then it does finally click and hold your attention a little more after a fair while, with one good plot reveal.Good cgi action follows. With occasional ok character moments. And a somewhat predictable ending. There is of course an extra scene to hint at the chance of more. Which at least comes before the end credits rather than after or during them.Watchable enough at it's best points. Uninteresting at it's more cliched ones. Not a terrible film. But not one that was necessary. I never got round to seeing it at the cinema. And i'm glad. Some may wish to know some scenes take place with subtitles that can't be turned off.The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, Spanish, French, Hindi. it also has English and French audio description.Subtitles: English, Arabic, Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, Hindi, Icelandic, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish. The disc begins with some trailers, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote.Quite a few extras:Deleted scenes. Which can be watched with or without director commentary, all in a row or individually. Ten of these. If watched in a row they last for seven minutes. A couple actually add a bit more character depth, which would have been welcome in the finished product.Features:Director's commentary.Hall of Heroes. Three mins about the Jaegers of the film. Strictly for obsessives.Bridge to uprising. Five mins of one of those general overviews of the film. The underworld of uprising. Four mins with two character overviews.Becoming cadets. Five mins with more character overviews.Unexpected villain. Four mins about one plot point, and a character overview with it.Next level Jaegers. Five mins about the new Jaegers of the film.I am scrapper. Three mins about one Jaeger.Going mega. Three mins about the monsters.Secrets of shad. Another three min character bit.Mako returns. A two min character bit. Some of these show how much character details can get lost in editing films down for their running time. Which is a shame. But that's Hollywood baby.

Targetting a younger audience than the last installment
It's clear from the outset with the cast that this movie (directed by Steven DeKnight) is for a younger audience than the first PR film. The visual effects look clean and much better than Gillermo's version (with its annoying hazy, fogged-up lens approach). I know the implausible giant robots are the main feature of the films but the smaller robot in PCU called 'Scrapper' is handsdown the most visually interesting, well-crafted and real-looking robot in the film series (it's certainly one I'd love to see physically built). Sadly as a Kaiju film, there's nothing here tieing it back to Japan, the originator of the kaiju genre. Mako Mori's role (played by the fantastic Rinko Kikuchi) is again criminally, dastardly underused in this film. The Chinese Shao Liwen character (played by the gorgeous Jing Tian) is excellent (and probably takes away from Rinko's character somewhat, as having so many strong female characters in one film seems to be too much for DeKnight to manage to fit on screen). The Bonus features on the DVD release are pretty good with some nice cast interviews and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Overall a very solid sequel.

Original much better.
It's not a patch on the original. Special effects are OK, but even as a continuation of the first one, the story is daft. Plus, yet again in films today everyone is mumbling. They speak in quiet whispers, and it's hard to follow what they're saying.Frankly two stars is being generous.

Cancelling the second apocalypse.
This is a fun sequel. I am baffled by the negative reviews. It's more fun with amazing effects as huge robots fight huge monsters and now huge robots also fight other huge robots. It's fun and has way more heart than any of the Transformers films (except Bumblebee, that's awesome). Those moaning that it's unrealistic that teenagers now build and operate Jaeger's need to maybe adjust their expectations. Loads of fun!
