I use these in my 360 degree tank for my Beta Fish, Gator Boy. Got him for my kids and of course, I'm the one who must clean the tank. I've had 5 gallon tanks and no matter what, the cleaning process was a pain. I have it down to a science now and it takes me 5 minutes. These filters are part of the plan.Step one: Take a metal rod, like a skewering rod, and stir up the rocks to break up waste.Step two: brush the side of the tank with a scrubber designed for fish tanksStep three: Empty about 24 - 32 oz of water with a small plastic cup into a larger cup and dump.Step four: Let the filters do their trick for a two minutes or so. Go drink a glass of water and kiss your wife and kids.Step five: move the filter in the back slot of your filter holder to the front slot.Step six: Put in a new filter into the back slot.Step seven: add back bottled water with conditioner. DON'T USE TAP WATER. Even though i conditioned the water, this process sent Gator Boy into shock every time. I thought I lost him a few times initially but he survived. Now with bottled water that I put a few conditioner drops in, Gator Boy is happy as a clam. Sounds odd for a fish. I do this once a week and the tank is spotless and Gator Boy is one happy Beta. Some might say that stirring up all the rocks and waste is dangerous and tough on the fish. Within a minute or two, the water is clear again so these filters do the trick. I let the one week old filter clean the mucky water before putting in the new one just to insure he really has clean water. Instead of doing a nose job to the bottom of the tank when I used tap water, he likes to swim around the cleaning rod and play. He's a good fish. This is really the easiest method I've found.
