A Million Cats: Fabulous Felines to Color (Volume 1) (A Million Creatures to Color)

61 pages of Cute Cat Designs with some issues - printed on both sides of page
The media could not be loaded. This is a coloring book of many cats (though not quite a million of them!) The designs have a type of anime look to them. Their heads and tummies are a little on the large size with a distinctly well-fed look to them. The cats seem to inhabit a kind of fantasy land where anything and everything may just be a cat or somehow cat related. One of my favorites is a two page spread of an art gallery where cats are swapped in for some very famous paintings – including Gustav Klmit's “The Kiss” and Edvard Munch's “The Scream”Many of the designs in this coloring book are detailed in nature with some having many intricate and small areas to color. It will take some of my smaller nib pens and sharp, hard pencils to color certain portions of these designs.I will provide more details below, but here is a quick overview of the book:61 pages of cartoon style Cat and cat related designsPrinted on both sides of heavyweight non-perforated paperIncludes many two-page designsDesigns merge into the bindingGlue BindingAlcohol-based markers bleed through pageWater-based markers, India ink pens and gel pens do not bleed throughColoring pencils work well but blending is an issueThe coloring book is a smaller than average book at approximately 9 x 7 x .25 inches. The cover is cute and has gold foil accents. The designs are printed on both sides of heavyweight white non-perforated paper. The binding is glued and you will look important portions of designs if you remove the pages from this book. Many of the designs spread across two pages and designs merge into the binding on most pages. My book is not well aligned across the two-page spreads. There is a lack of consistency in how the pages meet. In some cases, portions of the design are lost in the binding and in other cases, there is a thin white strip on both sides of the page and look odd in the middle of the designs. I could not get the book to lie flat without some tearing at the binding on a number of pages. It is these two issues which cause me to give this book a 4 star rating although I think the artwork deserves a 5 star rating.I test my coloring books with a variety of coloring mediums (which I will list in the comments section below.) Here are the results of my tests:Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page quickly. My various water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens did not bleed through. My coloring pencils worked well for the most part, except when it came to blending. This is the second coloring book I have by publisher Lark in the last month where I cannot properly blend my soft lead pencils. The color goes on thick but when I try to blend it, it mostly stays put like a big stain. I can get a little blend at the edges but certainly not what I expect from a quality coloring book.If you decide to use alcohol-based markers with this book, you will mar the design on the back of the page but I recommend using a blotter page below the page you are working on to keep the ink from spreading further into the book.

Not a million cats, but a great illustration style of plenty!
BookThe size of this book is great for travelling with, it fits perfectly into a bag or desk at 23cm x 18cm and 64 pages. The cover is matte card with and assortment of designs from the book, in a limited colour palette. The cover has accents of gold, giving it a luxurious feel and look. The spine is glue and string bound – adding to its perfect portability, as this binding means that the pages are a lot firmer. This does mean that some of the images enter the spine, but the spine is quite pliable.Pages are double sided, which is a shame. The paper is bright white and lightly textured. Coloured pencils lay down smoothly and easily. I experienced shadowing and some light bleeding with both fineliners and waterbased markers, so I would recommend only pencils for this one'ImagesNow, I’m just going to say this upfront. There are not a million cats in this book. Including the front and back covers, there are 204 cats. But, that is still a whole lot of cats for a 64 page book!!!The artist has managed to create a book full of a wide variety of illustrations, but still make it cohesive, both through her art style, and of course, the addition of cats. There are cats hiding in a skyline of London, in a living room scene, in a page of flowers.Intricacy does vary a little throughout, with some images containing lots of small, detailed areas and some mainly larger areas. Line thickness varies form thin to moderate throughout, and this fits in quite nicely with the style of illustration.HealthIf you are a cat fan, or like a range of whimsical scenes, this book will suit you. The imagery is great for distraction, and engaging your imagination. The book may suit those with fluctuating concentration levels, as there is a variety of intricacies. The images are the type that have natural stopping points – you can colour one building, flower or cat if your concentration is low, or you can finish an entire page if you are having an easier time concentrating. The book will probably not be suitable for those with vision and fine motor impairments. The line thickness and detailed areas mean that it is difficult to see some of the lines and areas of images. As always though, please check the images before making up your mind.

Kat Reviews "A Million Cats".
This book is filled with a delightful assortment of felines in all sorts of environments. If you are looking for a dry reckoning of felines, you'll have to go elsewhere. This book is filled with felines in all types of situations; From the heel of a stiletto shoe to a yin/yang comprised of two felines. The only downfall is the pages are printed on both sides, causing the artist to choose which side to display. Otherwisethesesassy felines are displayed in cucumbers, in teapots, on stilts, and even hiding in fresh garden vegetables. Overall, a fantastic romp through the artist's imagination! The only drawback being, the designs are printed on both sides of the pages, forcing the sacrifice of one design for the display of another.

good!
it's a fun book. not actually a million cats, in fact some pages don't have cats on them at all, just random little cute things. i dislike how the book opens and how the pages don't perferate but it is nice and cute to carry around for a lil coloring

LOOOVE IT
This is so cute and the paper is thick enough to paint with gouache or acrylics. I tried watercolors and it stained the other side of the page but it is fine, I can still paint with acrylics on the other side. The drawings are really cute fat cats and cover most of the space (which I like) and every page has a lot of details so whoever uses this coloring book will have a lot of work ahead.I also bought the one with bears as I like the cats one so much.

Love it!
I have only three detractions from the entire book:1. the pages are printed on both sides of the page, which sucks if you want to use any medium other than crayons.2. the designs on the pages frequently go right to the center margin, which means you'll need to break the binding to get the best reach in the corner.3. this book is not typical A4/US Letter size, like most coloring books. I would have liked the warning when I made the purchase, though this doesn't impact the ability to color the pages.I absolutely love Lulu Mayo's work and enjoy following her on Instagram. I found her quite by accident in a facebook group and via articles discussing adult coloring books and recommending animal based coloring book designs. Once I'd seen her art, I fell in love. Her style is quite similar to some Japanese art that was quite popular in the 70s to early 90s and features chubby, wel fed and happy cats throughout the book. A few of the cats in the book are reminiscent of Maneki-Neko and a great many of them wear belled collars that are typical of Japanese cats. (Nekoichi and large safety bells, for example)The cover is not only gorgeous with the gold foil design, but it is of thick cardstock. The paper inside is also thick, but I would not reccommend using markers or watercolors with it at all. Instead, I recommend copying on a 120 weight or heavier paper. If you love cats, you'll love this coloring book!

I recommend this!
When I first saw this book, it gave me the Neko-Atsume vibes and I knew I had to get it for my cat-crazy friend who plays Neko-Atsume on her phone all the time. I actually bought two different cat colouring books, and this one has a whimsical and anime-like feel (though it isn't really anime) compared to the other one.I recommend this!
