I ruffed it!
When you love the main character, it makes you really want to read on and on. This story is very unique and captivating. And, as a dog lover, this was an added bonus. A bit of Jonathan exists in all of us, and so he takes you on this roller coaster journey, that is frightening yet exciting. Thank God for the pups. They are his saving grace!

Hilarious!
I loved this book! Downloaded it as reading material for two three hour flights and boy, did this make the plane ride go by! I had to keep myself from laughing out loud at the dialogue on nearly every page. Rosoff's characters are relatable yet simultaneously outrageous, making me want more of their crazy shenanigans. The dogs in the story possess an admirably subtle ingenuity in their interaction with the main character; marvelously well written. Great read for anyone who agrees that dogs are good judges of character.

Dogs as Realistic Main Characters - What Could be Better?
I love any novel that features dogs as main and motivating characters when they are treated realistically. This one fills the bill, and then some. As a person who just happens to be going through a lot of the same kind of turmoil as Jonathan, the novel resonates with me -- and it was so wonderful to be able to laugh out loud so many times. A delightful read!!

I really enjoyed this
Got the audiobook and really enjoyed it. It was a funny story where the dogs have a part but don't dominate and -- no one dies! The reader was perfect and it had laugh out loud moments. I would hope Meg Rosoff keeps writing and often. I would look forward to more. I loved Jonathan and his friends and his situations. Great summer reading.

A must read for every dog owner looking for romance :)
Stumble upon this book by chance and loved it. Captured very well the dynamics, thoughts, anguishes and yearnings of the single dog owner, looking for romance. The romantic twists in the book are rather cliche, yet don't take away anything from the overall quality and entertainment element of the book.

Man's best friend, indeed!
It's always a joy to read a story where you love the main character, even as they twirl you through hoops till the end! Such a quirky story with a surprise ending. I didn't want it to end. You won't either.

Very original voice. A bit like Beckett. The ending was a bit disappointing but most books tie up ends nicely in the end. The book read fast and could easily be finished on a long plane flight. I enjoyed.

This fun, catchy, delightful (and deceptively rich) read is perfect for what ails you ...
Wow, this is pretty much unputdownable -- I finished it in two days. It's incredibly well written by a master wordsmith, and is charming, delightful and funny while still being quite realistic (and capturing the atmosphere of New York City perfectly). It's a great story that is rich and multi-dimensional.The clever plot line and funny dialogue end up seeming quite cinematic -- I wouldn't be surprised if this got turned into a fabulous movie.Meg Rosoff is an American who moved to London 30 years ago. She brings her British flair for brisk and witty writing to this book, as well as a great ear for up-to-the-minute catchy wording honed by being in advertising for many years before she became a novelist.I recommend this book to everyone -- it's a great pick-me-up, and the writing is so intelligent and creative it sparks your own inner creativity. Don't make the silly mistake of thinking this is a dog book or a book for dog lovers -- it's not, and the dogs could just have well been replaced by other sentient beings (including humans). Read the Amazon sample view, and if you like it the rest of the book is just as great!

enjoyable book by writer with talent
much as I hate to say this, feel that I may be a bit old to fully appreciate this book although I did enjoy it greatly and read it with real enjoyment.but, although I could the situations were funny, the book did not make me laugh all that much- can see that it might make a wonderful film and visuals might make the comedy work better for an old crusty like me.Can just see the wonderful 'non' wedding ' fracas and Jonathan's last marketing presentation transferring well. Also the atmosphere and energy of New York was spot on and the awful Julie was magnificent.as a cat- person fell , even so, for the charms of the two main dogs and thought they almost stole the book.but there is also quite a bit going on here (Jonathan is clearly not a totaaly well individual but this is never heavy-handed or even presented as a big hand-wringing 'issue- good for the author not being heavy-handed.overall, really enjoyed it at the rom-com level and thik the writer has obvious talent.

Satirical take on modern urban life
This is a very funny satirical take on modern urban life disguised as a frothy romance. Jonathan is the completely ditzy central character. Traditionally he would be female. He works in a niche advertising agency selling office stationery, a job he got through a childhood friend. He has a nice apartment he found by chance, and whose true ownership is shrouded in mystery. He is looking after his brothers' dogs while the latter is working in Dubai. He has a four-year girlfriend through habit who works for a bridal magazine. He lets life sweep him along into inevitable muddles and crossed wires, helped by the dogs, who clearly have minds of their own and want to steer events their own way. If this sounds lame, don't be put off. It is lightweight, but very well written and very engaging. I kept thinking about Alan Holinghurst's Line of Beauty. The books are not similar, but the drifting through life of a young man newly moved to the city has powerful echoes.

The dogs are the stars
This is a well written book, accessible and with complete characterisations. Whilst it can be firmly placed in the rom com genre, it does include mental health issues . The dogs are the stars, and what I particularly liked was that they remained dogs !!!

This book is a sheer delight - witty and delightful
This book is a sheer delight - witty and delightful. The pace is perfect - her writing is taking on a new dimension beyond the excellent YA novels she has authored. No wonder she has just won the largest cash prize in the world for children's literature! This, her first foray into the wider fiction world, will no doubt win her further award. I heartily recommend!

A definite Book Club choice.
A self absorbed young man attempting to make his way in advertising (a business that the author obviously finds odious) moves from the mid-west to New York. An idiot for a boss, a crummy apartment and a demanding fiancée are balanced by a fine pair of dogs, inherited from his brother. Kind of an updated 'Sex in the City' from a neurotic male's point of view, with the addition of canine psychologists / matchmakers. A definite Book Club choice.
