Joe is to Fair Trade as Greta is to Climate Change
If you want to understand how movements for change in the world come about, develop and morph over time, then this is the book for you. Fair trade followed in the wake of the organic movement as it captured the public imagination and broke out of the church ghetto it had been largely trapped in up 'til then. The Fairtrade Foundation, headed up by a dynamic new leader in the form of Harriet Lamb, spearheaded this breakthrough into the mass market, enabled and promoted through a grassroots activist network led by Traidcraft.Joe has had a front row seat at the heart of this pioneering movement for trade justice for over forty years. You can dip in and out of this book, use it for reference, or blast through it. A rich mix of personal stories, insightful analysis and comments from many of the other actors in the movement over many years make for a rich read. Fair trade has been Joe's lifelong vocation and this shines through in the book. This is recent history brought alive by eye witness accounts. Greta would do well to read it! Achieving lasting change in the world is hard graft and requires partnerships, wisdom and good timing. I had the privilege of working alongside Joe at Traidcraft and I can testify that his account rings true to me.
