The Pixies are one of the most influential American acts of all time. Initially spanning the late eighties and early nineties, they created the blueprint for alternative rock that would be followed and embellished upon by everyone from grunge to Britpop. After 10 years apart, the Pixies reformed in 2004. Around 6pm on a warm Saturday in August, the Pixies took the stage of the world-famous Newport Folk Festival to perform one of their most unique sets ever. Playing a completely acoustic performance, the reunited lineup of Frank Black, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering give a unique spin to 22 fan favorites! Tracklisting: 1. Bone Machine 2. Cactus 3. Ed is Dead 4. All Around the World 5. Subbacultcha 6. Monkey Gone to Heaven 7. Is She Weird 8. Here Comes Your Man 9. River Euphrates 10. Velouria 11. Wave of Mutilation 12. I Bleed 13. Crackity Jones 14. Gouge Away 15. Hey 16. The Holiday Song 17. Nimrods Song 18. Mr. Grieves 19. Caribou 20. Vamos 21. Where is My Mind? 22. Gigantic Bonus Features -21 Minute "fly on the wall" feature of the Pixies in rehearsals for their debut acoustic show as they deconstruct well-known Pixies songs from electric to acoustic versions, including "Debaser" (which didnt make the final set list). -Photo Gallery

Brilliant Pixies
It took 6 months from placing the order to arrive, but it was worth the wait. I love this, a lot. But I love the Pixies, so I am biased. This is great because you see a different side to them, and it shows how versatile they are, and actually how little they rely on electronics and effects to produce great music. Listening to it, it's hard to believe Dave Lovering only has a kick, snare, fixed high-hat and tambourine. If you are learning to play guitar and want to play Pixies songs, I can't think of better footage than this to see exactly how they play the pieces themselves, you get to see so much of their finger work, particularly Joey's and Charles', but also Kims's bass to an extent.

A different side of the pixies.
I am a Pixies fan from way back and really love their hard driving, loud quiet loud style. This offering is a nice refreshing take on their classic tunes. This all acoustic film from the Newport Jazz Festival lets you hear some vocal details than could never be heard in the standard versions. I found I really enjoyed this softer side of the Pixies. The quality, both sound and picture is excellent. Much better than the Pixies Sellout tour film as a matter of fact. If you are a Pixies fan buy this CD and enjoy a different look at the band.

what?No anamorphic?
Fine camerawork and editing are undercut by the lack of anamorphic mastering which in a widescreen video produced in 2006 is inexcusable. Also the unplugged format doesn't really serve Pixies music well. Because despite the obvious influences from the Talking Heads and the Police, the Pixies aren't really about music. They aren't really about playing guitars. Theirs is an impressionistic sound in which the effect is the point of the song. The lyrics mean whatever you happen to think they mean. Take away Santiago's distortion and half the sound and fury is gone.Because of the quick cutting video in Pixies Sell Out it looks like the Club Date is the concert video to have.

A must watch and listen DVD for pixies fans.
I'm a huge pixies fan, have been for years. I've seen them live and love the 'electric set'.I've particularly enjoyed tracks with acoustic rhythm guitar combined with joeys electric magic.Lately I've found myself being drawn to recent you tube clips of frank/Charles/black (whichever you choose) playing acoustically for small sets, charity appearances etc.A really nice relaxed nature to pixies tracks. Combined with a mellowing of the the singer I believe, (he can still pull off pixies hardcore magic just look at the recent eden sessions footage, I was there). This led me to this live at Newport DVD.It's great. Lovely setting if a little underwhelming. Although this arguably adds to the relaxed nature. An afternoon setting so also different. The whole gig feels chilled out, even relaxed fans. The band have a nice approach, professional and rehearsed as ever but with an added laid back element.Even verbal interaction from Charles to the audience which is rare! The set translates really well and highlights what a fantastic band pixies are.I'm a keen guitarist and particularly enjoyed watching joeys translation into acoustic. Also nice to see joeys mint gibson whilst Charles' guitar has a hole in it!I'd love to see a current pixies acoustic set, unfortunately no kim :( as I think a lot of the indie cindy content translates really well acoustically.Greens and blues, andro queen are favourites of mine to play acoustically. My wife is not a big fan but watched the complete DVD and extras.I am going to take the advice of another reviewer and put the tracks onto my MP3 player.A must watch and listen for any pixies fan or musically minded individual who can appreciate the electric/acoustic set translation.

pixies unplugged
the pixies at their best, I didn't know if their music would transpose into accoustic, but it does brilliantly plus they really enjoy them selves on stage. Highly recommended. 4/5.
