Q: Does it lock in the off position so you can use it to initially break a screw loose and then spin it out with power? How does that work?

No it doesn't. The gear train between the motor and the screwdriver shaft is a high reduction setup. I.e. the motor turns fast and the shaft turns slowly. Trying to twist the the screwdriver bit in either direct can be done but is fairly difficult as you are trying to spin a reduction gear in the opposite direction. In other words, trying to spin the motor and the gears at high speed meets with serious resistance. It's OK for little screws, tho', up to M3/6BA.

Q: Does this now use 4mm bits?

I received mine today, and measured the bits. They are 4mm not 1/8". I not that Tekton precision bits will fit, because I have those also and tried them. I believe all of the precision bit sets I have bought, within the past year or so, are 4mm so they are all interchangeable.

Q: does this have an adaptor that goes with it ? How do you keep it charged

This tool uses two AA batteries. I do use Rechargeable batteries .

Q: Is the thumb switch "trigger" variable speed? Or is it either on or off? Does it actually click on or you let go of it, will it return to off pos.

No, it is only one speed with a pretty good torque however it will not strip the screws. The switch is either on or off and must be held for forward or reverse directions. Keep in mind that this tool will fit the "abcGoodefg® 45 in 1 42 Tip Precision Magnetic Bit Screwdriver Set With Extension Bar". Hope it works for you as it has for me.
