Q: Is the plexiglass removable? I'm asking because I may paint the frame and that would save alot of taping.

Yes. But it is more of a thin plastic than plexiglass.

Q: Are they individual spaces for each photo, or do you have to tape them all in place?

The sample photos are one large sheet. It served as s template. Just tape your photos over the sample.

Q: What is the total size of this item?

It is approximately 45'' by 19" - sorry I couldn't provide with exact measurements because I have it hanging in my office and I only have an accountant's ruler to measure with. I hope this helps
