I download a lot of games from Steam. Am I able to keep my library of games in here?

I keep all of my steam games on this device that is why I bought it. It works great and is just as fast as the ssd inside my cpu it loads most games in under a min around 30-40 seconds. Highly recommend!

Is there built in backup software on the passport 1tb ssd drive?

Not that I can see on my drive although I have the 2TB version. I also do not see anything about backup software on the newer version of the drive. If you need backup software, I recommend Macrium Reflect. It allows you to backup individual folders and files and also lets you make image files of entire disks drives and can update those images using incremental or differential backups. You can schedule the backups to your liking. This is assuming you have a Windows-based computer as it doesn't work on other OS. If you don't use Windows, I would recommend Siber System's Goodsync backup software as I believe it works on all popular OS.

If i don't use time machine can i just plug this into my mac as a second drive not a time machine backup?

I believe so, although I have not done it. When I first plugged it into my mac, I was asked if I wanted to format it for Time Machine use. I said yes, but I believe that if I had not, it would have functioned as an ordinary external drive.
