Manager as Coach: The New Way to Get Results

OSCAR works better than GROW for Managers
The key principles of the coaching approach presented by Jenny Rogers and her co-authors resonate with me. Especially the three following ideas:1) Year-end judgement on performance of the direct reports does not ensure that results expected from a team are delivered.2) Giving advise is contra productive - leveraging the resources of the direct reports within a well defined process delivers better business results and improves employee engagement at the same time and2) GROW model for managerial coaching is not effective enough; coaching using OSCAR model ensures that direct reports deliver the results expected from the team and its leader.Who is OSCAR? What is OSCAR? You can learn it quickly from this practical business book. All HR professionals should read it.

Each manager should have a copy of this book
This is an outstanding book; each manager should have a copy of it. It describes all the key Coaching skills a manager needs, it uses examples to explain how others have applied those skills, and the OSCAR model described in the book, is extremely useful.

Be a more effective manager with this book
Another useful and practical book on coaching to have. The book has very practical chapters which I like such as:- The coaching mindset- Being a brilliant listener- Creating fresh thinking: questioning and feedback- Managing the coaching conversationand others. The OSCAR (Outcome, Situation, Choices and Consequences, Action, and Review) model is discussed in detail in different contexts with its applications. What makes this book readable and practical are the many examples of coaching situations and the coaching conversations provided. Overall, a good book for any manager or anyone who wants to become more effective in getting results.

Fantastic!
If there is one book that all business executives--managers, department heads, VPs, and executives--need to have, it is this one. I have worked as a coach for many years and I know the value of a "coach approach" to getting results, changing attitudes, and creating employee engagement. In clear, simple language, this author describes how management level personnel can understand, integrate, and execute a coach approach to management and leadership. People in business often talk about the value of coaching. But managers and executives rarely know what this actually means. This is the first book that gives business executives a pragmatic and easy to understand approach to using coaching in their daily business interactions. A brilliant book!

Brilliant book!!
I have read many coaching books and this is among the best. I deliver coaching training for managers, and have found that most coaching books do not adequately discuss the role of managers as coaches. This book does. Jenny's style is engaging and practical. The book includes excellent case studies and stories which demonstrate the different coaching skills for managers such as feedback, questioning and using the OSCAR coaching model. There are lots of practical hints and tips too. Jenny fully takes the managers role into account by acknowledging that managers have vested interests in coaching outcomes and have their own business' objectives to take into account. I think coaches and managers would be able to relate to the content of this book. Some of Jenny's offerings may be perceived in some contexts as controversial such as questioning the point of the annual performance process. However, I found this thought provoking and made a lot of sense. I have found myself dipping in and out of this book a lot both as a coach within an organisation and as a coaching trainer. Jenny is also one of the few authors (other than Peter Hawkins) who devotes a section to creating a coaching culture.High recommended!!
