It would be best to use this shoe organizer horizontally because it's made that way for stacking. Holes for the dowels are on the bottom when sitting horizontally. Also, shoes sit upright in this position. You can use it vertically though because the shelves are that strong, but your shoes would have to lay down sideways. Also, no security when stacking vertically.

The measurements of an individual slot is: 11-7/8" deep, 4-3/4" tall and 6"wide. I use this as a shoe cubby and I've recently posted a photo.
