A gripping series
The story lines and lead characters of the Dark Yorkshire series - all six books - are strong. One might complain that the lead copper is a bit cliched, troubled, over-dependent on a slug of Scotch, at odds with his superiors but always winning through thanks to a streak of genius. But the power of the plots and the vivid depiction of York and North Yorkshire carry the books through, even if one might wish Caslin didn’t get beaten up more often than is decent or credible in a senior police officer. What is a let-down however, is the very poor editing which takes hold after the first couple of books. The clunky sentences and outbreaks of purple prose become distracting in the later books and I found myself wishing I could take a blue pencil to page after page. Is this the fault of the original publisher or has sloppiness crept into transposition to Kindle by Amazon? I don’t know but Mr Dalgleish deserves better.

Nasty habits!
Why is every smile a smirk? Even our heros’ are incapable of smiling shyly, or grimly. No; they all smile in an irritatingly smug, conceited, or silly way – i.e. smirk - all of the time. I am finding it an irritating writer’s tic that makes it extremely hard to empathise with, or care about our lead characters. I think the author has or aspires to a North American readership. He insults them, and us by constantly having his British detective claim that a killer is going to be charged with First Degree Murder. This is not a charge in British law. We have Murder and Manslaughter, not too difficult to explain I wouldn’t think. Otherwise, easy to read thrillers in both Yorkshire and Norfolk books, with good levels of suspense, to read at the end of a tough day.

Story not as good as the past
I found the story was not up to the standard of the past in the series.I didn't think that it flowed the same. It seemed to dwell on the personal rather than procedures.

Caslin back again
I have enjoyed the last 2 of this series & did enjoy this, but at times I felt it was a bit far fetched and some of the story left you wondering how certain things happened & how someone got to where they were. However I will read the next in the series as I enjoy Dalgliesh's writing, especially his Norfolk series.

I’ve enjoyed all three titles in the series so far. I think the characters have grown.I’m intrigued as to where things will progress. On that basis I’ve just downloaded the next three titles in the series.I read for entertainment and I found this series quite entertaining.I’m enjoying this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Cheers Kev

Caslin is a fantastic character. I truly cannot put these books down. Work is an interruption in my reading time, haha. In all seriousness I am captivated by these characters and storylines. Anyone new to these stories please read you WILL NOT be disappointed.
