Sempe: Mixed Messages

Fine book.

The drawings are lovely, but over all this is a bit disappointing. Seems very dated. It was supposed to be a gift for someone, but it was a bit more shabby looking than I expected - but I knew it was secondhand, so that's my own problem. Anyway - not the best purchase I've ever made.

Somehow this collection of cartoons feels a little tired. There are few illustrations in colour and the matt finish of the paper does not do justice to the fine detail of the drawings. The best Sempe cartoons have a warmth and empathy, plus a quality of surprise that is lacking here. If you are new to Sempe, start with another book, perhaps C'est La Vie.
