StarTechcom mSATA SSD to 2.5in SATA Adapter Converter - mSATA to SATA Adapter for 2.5in bay with Open Frame Bracket and 7mm Drive Height (SAT32MSAT257)

I was using this device in a modded original XBOX, and despite initially being pleased with the converter and feeling like it was an improvement over what I'd bought before, I started experiencing issues with booting the console. It's likely that the converter itself had no part in causing the problem, but as I went through the process of troubleshooting, it became necessary to connect, disconnect, and reconnect several different SATA drives to the console using this converter. Unfortunately, during the process the pins of the converter became bent at both ends (see photo), and whilst this could be me being too rough, the fact remains that IDE connections are quite stiff and a certain amount of pressure must be applied to ensure a firm connection. I also hasten to add that I have other styles of converters, none of which have never become damaged despite going through the same processes and more besides. As such, it is my opinion that this converter - although it looks and feels to be of a decent quality - simply isn't robust enough for the task at hand. I'd suggest that if you only need to connect it once and you never need to touch it again, it will probably work just fine, but frankly I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

You cannot use this device to connect an old IDE drive to a modern SATA PC. The power adaptor cable supplied doesn't have any SATA plugs - only Molex, so there's no way to power an IDE drive from a PSU that only has SATA power connectors.Hoping to get round that problem I bought a male SATA to female molex adaptor in order to get power from the motherboard to the old IDE drive but even that didn't work. When I power up my PC the boot procedure stops when it gets to this device.So looking at other reviews I think this device will allow a SATA drive to be connected to an old IDE PC but not enable an old IDE drive to be plugged into a new PC with SATA PSU connectors.

I bought this for adding a SATA SSD to my OG Xbox. You will need a modified console to use a non OEM HDD.Took me about 10 minutes to physcially install and swap the HDD to the SSD and then another 30 mins or so to re-set everythign up from scratch using the Slayer Auto Installer.The PATA to SATA interface works perfectly and I opted for this over cheaper no-name brands. I have never had a problem with anythign Startech and use their equipment at home and in work. They are always a go-to brand.

Had hoped for better. Intended purpose was to connect old IDE/PATA drives to SATA controllers so as to avoid using old controller cards. Connection of the adapter was easy and it worked straightaway. However, on the old controller cards, these disks manage about 50MB/s read and 45MB/s write for large sustained writes (too big to cache). On the Bi-Directional SATA IDE Adapter Converter, write speeds were less than a tenth of that at 2-4MB/s. Tried on 3 different disks; setting disks as cable select or master made no difference. Position of switches on the adapter (which are inadequately described on the instruction sheet) made no difference. Not fit for purpose as these disks are used for backup of system images (30-60GB). Might just about be adequate for low workloads with small (cacheable) files if desperate.

I am stunned to say it worked first time. I took the WD400BB 40GB 7200rpm IDE hard disk drive out of my 2007 Fostex MR16HD/CD Portastudio, because traditional disk drives are so so so noisy, I fitted a GIGABYTE 120GB SSD SATA III solid state drive which is silent and three times the size of my old drive, powered the portastudio on whilst holding the stop button so that it did not try to load anything from the new SSD and it went straight into "do you want to format the disk", I selected yes, it formatted very quickly and loaded a blank Song 01, I recorded some Roland TR8 and played it back from tracks 1 & 2. Plugged the Fostex USB into my Mac, selected USB mode on the Fostex, and my Mac recognised it as a 120GB drive ready to import songs. Unbelievable, it just worked. The adaptor feels a little fragile so I gently pressed the cables onto the adaptor little by little, using a cloth to not touch any circuitry.
