How to Draw People: Easy Step-by-Step Drawings! (Dover How to Draw)

I love books of drawing. This was great.

Imagine a book with simple drawings decomposed step by step on the left page and white blank pages on your right. No text. Kids first observe the lines and shape and reproduce them on the blank page until they obtain the same drawing than the author. The more they draw these drawings the more their gesture is free, but precise, and soon drawing geometrical or organic shapes together to represent something they see becomes an automatism. Practice is the key and this book will help. Easy, simple books at a decent price, this whole collection will be the perfect opportunity for your kids to learn drawing basics having fun.

Bought this for my daughter so she can learn how to draw people. Hope she likes it.

A good book for my grandson to start learning how to draw people. The drawings in this book are more in regards to cartoon people. But it will still give him a elementary foundation for limb placement and proportions. Each project has 4 steps which build to complete the specific drawing. One drawing, the scuba diver, has a scene as the last step with two fish, bubbles and what appears the be the water's horizon. I look forward to how my grandson handles the challenge. Tracing paper will help with practice without getting discouraged. Practice pages are included opposite the projects but the next project is on the back of that page. I would have given it 5 stars if the practice page could be removed.

Nice drawing book! I bought it as a gift. My Daughter n Law is going to love it!!!

I am so happy with the purchase and so is my eight year old son. I remembered having "How to Draw" books when I was a kid and I really enjoyed them so I thought I would buy some for my son. First we check the library (needle in a haystack and long wait list) and we went to Books A Million to try and pick some up right away. Ugh. What I didn't like about that experience was that first of all, the majority of the books were very girl focused (princesses, fairies, ponies, dolls) and though I support my son wanting to use any of those books- he simply didn't. Secondly, the books we did find we either very simple not realistic type picture instructions or on the other end of the scale that it was pre-teen/adult stuff. Lastly, the price was pretty steep per book. We left with one book and very disappointed. So I decide to come online and see what I could find since he did have the one book to tie him over. I did a lot of searching and the Barbara Soloff collection seemed right on the money for what I was after. The books came the other day (one a rainy day no less :-) !!) and my son spent over an hour drawing until his little hand was cramped. They are high quality and afordable with the perfect level with room to grow. So very happy. The selection of books is so wide it was hard to only buy 3! My son has already started combining pictures from each book. My fridge has never looked more beautiful and inspiring :-) .

Sadly this book is very stereotypical, with boys in the majority of the designs.being the astronaut, fireman, baseball player, business executive, tennis player, the running with kite kid, the hockey player, the kid playing at the beach,the mountain hiker, the mail carrier, the cowboy, the artist with easel, and the laughing jokester. There are a couple of designs that were boys, but she added some strands of hair to lead you to think they might be girls and not just long haired boys. There IS a girl scuba diver, and a girl skateboarder, but that is somewhat offset by the young girl depicted carrying her little dolly look-alike, while the young boy carries a bat. I think we were way more enlightened about sexism when this book was published back in 2002. So stick to the How to Draw Animals or Dinosaurs, both in this series, and you avoid the question from your daughter as to why all the jobs are given to the boys in the book. And why do some of the girls look like boys with long hair, like the drum major and the fishing girl? If you give this so a young person learning to draw, be sure to tell them that there are lots of women astronauts and executives and Hockey players(did you not watch the USA Women win the Gold Cup?)and artists, and that now girls can be anything they want to be.

My grandson is so happy, happiest when he is drawing, coloring, painting. He wants to be able to draw a lot of things and this little book will help him greatly. I know he will love it. I got another one on dinosaurs and he loves it.

We take this book on holiday for rainy days, and my children (aged 6 and 8) love it. By following the step by step pictures they can quite quickly draw children doing lots of different things eg skateboarding, walking to school or roller-skating. The pictures are simple outlines with basic details - no shading or colouring - and they help my children to understand the basic shapes and proportions. We all produce much better drawings with the book than without it - and the results are very satisfying.
