Roman Heavy Cavalry: The Rest of the Story...
In this Osprey Elite Series book, authors Andrey Negin and Raffaele D'Amato argue that heavy cavalry survived the demise of the Western portion of the Roman Empire. Drawing on evidence from surviving histories, artwork, and archeological finds, they contend that the Eastern Roman Empire employed heavy cavalry until nearly its demise in the 15th Century. Along the way, the authors address manning, equipment, and tactics of heavy cavalry units. The reader need not agree with the historical argument to appreciate the presentation. The book includes the expected color plates, along with commentary on uniforms and equipment. Of note, it appears that equipment evolved over time, thanks in part to contact with and combat against other mounted armed forces. Well recommended to the student of the Roman Empire as a concise but informative read.
