Thor: For Asgard

Beautiful art and I enjoyed this approach to Thor.

It was very interesting to see how Thor would be as king of Asgard. It even goes as far as to mix more Norse mythology into the story too.

After seeing Simone Bianchi's gorgeous artwork for Astonishing X-Men, I was stunned to see him top his previous work with this book. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous illustrations. Bianchi knows the points where word balloons need to go away, and just to show us the epic gods of Asgard as they were meant to be seen. (I would have loved to see him render an entire issue without dialogue, or perhaps single-page spreads as Walt Simonson did long ago.)That's not to say the writing is something to ignore, the characters are compelling and real in a sense that was perhaps lacking through many other Thor runs. At times, I wondered if the various 'dissenting' characters would break into dialogue from "Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail", but it was great to see regular Asgardians brought forth and presented in the spotlight. They will be needed, as the body count for this story is high. But what's immortality without a little risk to make it interesting?A magnificent effort. Perhaps the mythologies don't quite match up with "Thor - Avengers Disassembled", but that's okay. We're taking Thor in new directions. And the reader is lucky to be along for the ride in this one.

Being of Swedish descent, I am a huge Thor/Norse Mythology fan. I think Robert Rodi has earned his spot in Valhalla. Everyone always brags on the J. M. Straczynski run, but it does not hold a light to the Rodi books. I even liked Matt Fraction's Thor: Ages Of Thunder better than the JMS run. I am a huge fan of the Loki book Rodi put out a couple years ago with Esad Ribic art a couple years ago(now re-released as Thor & Loki Blood Brothers). It was so good that I pre-ordered this book as soon as I could. It was not a let down at all, every bit as good as Loki. This is another story set at a very dark time in Thor's life. The All-Father Odin has been gone for two years. The Fimul Winter has made the trees not produce the Golden Apples they need for immortality and Thor con not even lift his hammer The Mighty Mjolnir(Myol-neer). The art by Simone Bianchi is fantastic. I love how the panels are laid out in this book. Also with the dustjacket off it is a beautiful hardcover, shocking white with pearl silver letters. I can not wait till The Astonishing Thor by Rodi comes out later this year. Buy this book before it is gone.

Asgard is in turmoil. Balder the Brave is dead, Odin is in self-imposed exile, a 26-month winter assails the Realm Eternal, the Apples of Idunn cannot grow, the Bifrost is broken, dissent and disputes plague the streets and also Asgard's court. Ragnarok approaches.Thor sits on the throne as Asgard's regent but ruling does not sit kindly with the Odinson and he can no longer wield Mjolnir. A mysterious enemy sows discord and violence throughout Asgard and Thor must do all he can to save his people. Balder taunts his dreams and mocks his failings so the Thunder God travels to Valhalla to confront him, while Idunn and her brother Frey must find a new path to Midgard to find fertile soil for the apples of immortality. Tyr and Sif bicker and squabble as interim rulers of Asgard in Thor's absence. In Valhalla, Hela empties it so the fallen Gods end up in Niffelheim.Nothing is going right for the Asgardians. Yet Thor learns from Balder that he has not been mocking him, merely trying to put him on the correct path. He learns about the cycle; where everything that has happened before, will happen again. Once there is death, so there is rebirth. Thor realises he must not act as his father would, but to act as he should and submit to the inevitable, and let the wheel turn.Thor must save his doomed people and restore Asgard to its former glory and seek out the mysterious enemy that attacks from within.This is a standalone story from a time before Thor's adventures as an Avenger. There is no need to read any of the current or recent Thor volumes since Michael J Straczynski brought Thor and Asgard to Broxton, Oklahoma. I found this tale better than Robert Rodi's other recent story  Thor: The Deviants Saga (Thor (Graphic Novels)) but it is not yet complete. Whilst I thought it was ok, it was not brilliant, and there is definitely some unfinished business to be explained. Considering this story is now 3 years old I guess it didn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel or continuation. Some things are clearly resolved in this story, so don't think that it's entirely incomplete - but there is a slight cliffhanger at the end.The artwork by Simone Bianchi is of a very high standard, but it's not the style I would normally rave about.I'm giving this 2.5 stars as opposed to 3, which is more than I gave to the instantly forgettable The Deviants Saga.

Very disappointed with this story. The artwork is beautiful to look at, but the story is lacking in many ways. It's rather boring, a bit confusing, and the ending is rushed and anti-climatic.

I have been a fan of Marvel's Thor for many years. The art in this book is wonderful. The fact that it was out of continuity was refreshing. If you are a fan of Thor this is a good read.

Great art, interesting enough story behind it. Love the drawings and poses for the panels.
