Hayao Miyazaki

This book was written as a companion to an exhibition of artwork by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' museum in 2021. It features breathtaking original pencil and watercolour artwork made by Miyazaki for his films, as well as background art for some of the most famous scenes. Each chapter is written by a film or animation scholar/critic, giving insight into Miyazaki's creative processes, as well as artistic and symbolic themes in his work. A complete list of Ghibli's films with brief info is also given as an Appendix. The book is written formarly, but is also deeply fascinating, and features biographical background on Miyazaki's career as an animator and manga artist, as well as his inspirations. Needless to say, this handsome volume is an absolute must-have for fans of Ghibli, Miyazaki and anime in general, as well as fans of filmmaking. It serves as a gorgeous visual reminder of why Ghibli's films are timeless works of art.

I am in the process of collecting every book I can possibly find on Hayao Miyazaki and his work in Studio Ghibli. As such, I was very impressed with the anecdotes, pieces of art, and other background stories within this book. Additionally, the colors were printed very nicely, making this collection a nice coffee table book.

I normally won’t purchase books on Amazon when I can help it because I like keeping the doors open for my favorite bookstore Barnes & Noble. But when I saw that the store was selling this book for almost $60, I found it for HALF the price here 🫠 snagged it immediately. Beautiful book with a long backstory of Hayao Miyazaki and gorgeous artwork from his film process. Must have book for your home or collection!

This is a gift and came quickly with plastic wrap. It's about an inch thick with beautiful front and back covers. I know this will be a hit for my Studio Ghibli fan.
