Q: Is the bottom soft or is there a hard/sturdy bottom?

The bottom is soft. It's completely collapsible. I don't see why you can place something less flexible at the bottom, but you would just have to be extremely careful so that whatever you place at the bottom does not rip or tear the insides.

Q: Can plates fit in the front pocket?

The large pocket is the width of a gallon sized ziplock, but 2 inches shorter than the height of it. The pocket is about 2 inches deep. Hope this helps, I’m traveling and don’t have access to a typical tape measure. The small pocket is perfect for plastic ware. I like the cooler more than I thought I would. Great purchase.
