Q: Why doesn't it cone with the sponge filter as it shows in the picture?

The sponge filter seems to cause an air lock in the pump which screws it right up. I struggled with this problem for months. The plastic cage filter works just fine. Forget the sponge. It's been upgraded.

It can be used externally - that is exactly why I bought it. My fountain had a submersed pump and what a pain to clean out. This pump I have hooked up via two hoses hidden behind with pump outside on floor. Runs flawless since years. It ships with no fittings - you need to obtain them from local hardware store. It's well build, runs quiet, and just in case easy to connect and disconnect for cleaning - exactly what I needed.
