Just get one of those usb to sata cables/converter but look for high data transfer rate and you will be good to go. A programme called gparted is included in raspberry pi os that will easily partition and format. I use SSD drives for this due to there low power usage and faster data transfer. If you use a HDD drive you will have to power it separately. One thing I now do since raspberry pi os ( easy use operating system) has updated, it lets you run a SSD with the operating system on it and space for storage dependant on drive size as well. I do this for a few different operating systems instead of a SD card.
