Really nice, well-made, great smell
This was a nice experience overall and it seems well-made. I wanted to try a traditional igusa mat for a long time and finally got one. I put it on top of my Japanese futon (which was right on top of my western mattress). The smell was nice and pretty gentle. Hard to describe. Grassy, like a nice hay. It looked well-made and was smooth, easy to fold. The only thing is, I have allergies to all kinds of things like pollen/hay/certain grasses and I think that this igusa mat triggered them so I woke up with some sniffling and minor allergy symptoms. It could have also been a combination of other springtime allergies causing post nasal drip, I don't want to put the blame solely on this mat. In the end, I decided it's best for me to not sleep with it anymore...so if you're very sensitive or have allergies to a lot of things like me, it might not work for you as a mattress. But it was lovely to fall asleep to at night and the smell was comforting, it would work as a floor mat too. I wish I didn't have allergies. But definitely worth a try and glad I got to experience it at least for a bit :)

Excellent quality, has a smell
Excellent quality! It’s been over a year now since I purchased this mat and it had no issues to date. Material has a smell from day one if it’s your first time purchasing so be aware.

works well
I bought this to go on my porch swing along with a Japanese mattress that rolls up. This is great in that I can bring both in before a severe storm in just a few minutes and take up little space. These will last forever and are great to nap on, so comfortable and lightweight!

Is this a good tatami? I dunno but it works for me!
Don't have much basis for comparison, but met my expectations. Non-skid underside isn't THAT non-skid, but if you're using this as some sort of floor cover it SHOULDN'T run away from beneath you and put you in splits. Just might wiggle and shimmy a bit. Would score higher if it really gripped, but it hasn't been an issue.Note: This is not "100%" Rush grass (it doesn't pretend to be). Joints and hem are synthetic. Plus or minus depending on who is buying. If I were to shop again I'd give the all natural products a look, but that said the joints on this are great. They fold both directions but still pull tight when laying flat. I don't notice any when sleeping directly on the mat - no futon - and the rush grass is comfortably smooth.Like I said, I don't really know the first thing about these sort of mats, it's made a great surface for a slatted platform bed. Wasn't cheap, but my back has thanked me, and I'm not sure the platform, tight as the slats are, would be comfortable with out. So it fits my purposes, looks nice, smells nice - if you're into that sort of thing, and is easy enough to manage clean, store. Just be ready to lean the thing up so it can air out regularly. It's easy enough, the mats are rigid aside from the joints. But you do need to exercise some good practice. For those concerned, the rush grass smell on mine went away in about three days. I'm not a fan, but I'm not especially bothers, had no issues sleeping on it right away. If you're more sensitive for whatever reason maybe give it a few days time on (dry) sunny days propped up in the sun before smothering yourself on it. Like I said, these stand up very easily, like folding screens. It's trivial to get them setup to air out. I personally just set mine up in a room with a dehumidifier because we don't see anything less than about 70% humidity, but only bothered with as much once. After I simply stood the joints up so there was air flow around all panels. EZ.

My first tatami mt
This mat is really nice for the price. It's soft, has that rush grass smell to it, and it's made my whole apartment just smell wonderful. I was surprised, for how thin it is, that it was still so comfortable to sleep on. I wanted to see how I'd sleep with just the mat, even though I have a floor futon, to see what it's like sleeping on tatami. I was not disappointed in the least. I'm glad I made this purchase.Best thing I've found, when first unrolling, was the corner stays for a Japanse futon. I was really happy as I have a Full size futon and it slips right into the corner stays. I can even roll up the tatami mat with the futon for easy stowage.

Not right for me but could be for you
I am writing this review six months after purchase for the roll-up twin. I decided to use it under a mattress topper with my futon laid over the topper. The tatami mat was on the floor (without moisture) but it molded and it has since been thrown out. It also contaminated the topper that was on it. I did like the smell, the straps, and the ease of storing it but it's thin and prone to mold. I am still giving it three stars because I feel like part of it is my fault for not airing it out enough and thinking it could be used as a barrier between the floor and the futon. I would not recommend it for this purpose, but I do think it could be a decent buy if used appropriately, and so do not let my review discourage you from determining if it is right for you. I now have a mattress topper on the floor encased in a zippered waterproof cover with my futon on top, which is working out well for me.
