Gay Men Don't Get Fat

Granted, there are certain things a book geared towards a gay audience must provide - fashion, girlfriends and lifestyle faux pas' being some of the most vital ones - but come on. I caught myself chuckling to some remarks - and although wanting to throw the book across the room many a time (for shamelessly sticking to the gay stereotypes, of course), I was captured. Doonan definitely has a voice - and a funny one at that. Just because I don't agree with the fact that all us gay guys live and die for fashion, doesn't mean that it isnt funny. After all, what did I expect - picking up a book with a man in a flower shirt on the cover? No florals in my closet. I give it 3 stars as I got through three chapters and found them funny. However, since the theme/content did not change that deep into the book - nor did the author offer anything else (humor included) that I have heard/read a thousand times before, I cast it aside. Would I recommend it, sure thing. Would I buy friends a copy? Nope. I think its time to move beyond the overdone stereotypes.

I agree that this book isn't as charming as some of Doonan's other writing, but it's still funny. The tone can be nasty at times in a way that can exclude the reader, which, as a writing style, I frankly don't understand. Nevertheless, one expects Doonan to be saucy and this book certainly is. The writing on which foods are gay, straight, or lesbian was hilarious, and I'm reminded of it all of the time. My tip: get it used and pay just a few bucks for it. This is good for an airplane or a night in but not a real keeper.

Very funny, educational, a page turner, nothing naff about it. Buy it, read it, quote it, tell your friends. Much better than moobies.

Just fablous, hilarious stories that are laugh out loud funny. Loved reading about his childhood escapdes in England. Never saw any of his windows in person but his real talent is story telling and communicating. A very entertaining book full of sweet memories, and crazy adventures. Just wish it were longer and told more about the people he worked with.

Fun, informative and with some heartfelt moments. Interesting stories abound, especially a out The White House Christmas with First Lady Michelle Obama.

That Simon Doonan is a character like no other. It's all empty calories, and certainly brings a giggle to the reader.

Obviously not rocket science. But, funny and insightful. I gifted it to several gay friends. Also good to learn more about the author and his relationship with Adler.

I've been a big fan of SD for many years. Another good read fromone of the beautiful people. I'm a great admirer.

it was OK, I found his humour a bit too queenie for my taste.

Really couldn't make it more than a couple of chapters through this. I think it may have been aimed at a different target audience, or perhaps I hadn't sufficiently absorbed who the hell Simon Doonan was, but "we gays" is not a phrase I want to see used with any kind of seriousness, casually reducing everyone with a shared sexual orientation into a set of elderly stereotypes as if Doonan were the authority on every single other gay man in existence. Horrid.
