Paper Moon

It’s very good.
I enjoyed how the film captured the time period, and mostly I enjoyed watching father and daughter play off each other so convincingly and the chemistry between them. I would recommend the book highly, as this film was short and missed the best parts of the story. Overall a fine performance by all the actors, and the fact it was filmed in black and white.

The definition of a complete package...
Truly one of my favorite films of all time, `Paper Moon' deserves a spot in the catalogues of time as one of the best films ever made concerning the important relationship that buds between a father and daughter. I am moved to feel so many differing emotions when watching this delightful film. I laugh, I cry; I am moved in so many ways when reflecting on the beautiful development taking place on screen, and that is a true testament to remarkable filmmaking.Yes, `Paper Moon' is a complete package if I ever saw one!The film tells of orphan Addie Loggins. At her mother's funeral she meets Moses Pray, a man who very well may be her father, even if he won't consider the possibility. After a little nudging he agrees to drive Addie to live with her Aunt, beings that she has no kin living close by. Moses is a con man, and soon he finds out that this little girl is better at conning than he is, and so they form a team so-to-speak. Along the way they pick up dancer Trixie Delight and her side-kick Imogene, a decision that does not sit well with Addie.`Paper Moon' is above all else a story about the need to connect to our family especially family as close as parents and children. Addie has this hole inside, a hole that can only be filled with the love of a father, and so when she becomes determined in her mind that this man is indeed her father she works like a dog to find that connection, even if it means becoming a con-artist. The rapport between this real life father and daughter team (Ryan and Tatum O'Neal) is beyond words really. They have such undeniable chemistry and they make each scene a delight to watch. This is most definitely a career highlight for both actors, and the roles they will be remembered for forever. Watching the progression of character on screen is such a joy, seeing them work from resentment and reluctance to admiration and respect to eventual love and embracement. This is not your typical family, but there is no denying they are a family. Both Madeline Kahn and P.J. Johnson also turn in wonderful supporting turns, complete with not only comedic timing but a pure sense of humanity that makes them so remarkably touching. Kahn is a superb actress who relates very well with O'Neal here (both O'Neal's, but most effectively Tatum), which makes for some very moving and memorable scenes.`Paper Moon' is a technical marvel as well, shot in pristine sepia (black and white with a red filter), a decision that adds an almost earthy tone to the film (thank you Orson Welles). Director Peter Bogdanovich should be commended for drawing out such a phenomenal performance from Tatum, a feat I hear was quite difficult for the director. What he gets from her, and his entire cast really, is nothing short of remarkable. Not only is `Paper Moon' an actors showcase and a delicate character study, but it has all the necessary elements (comedy, drama, action, suspense) to constitute it one of the most complete films I've ever had the pleasure of watching.Couple that with ample amounts of heart and you have a film I wouldn't hesitate to call `perfect'.

"Paper Moon" is a really great comedy/drama
I first saw "Paper Moon" not long after it was released in the spring of 1973. I was 19 at the time.Well I'm 64 now and I got it on DVD and I appreciate it more than ever. It stars Ryan O'Neal who was a rather big star at the box-office at the time and his daughter Tatum in her sensational acting debut. It takes place in 1936,mostly in Kansas and St. Joseph, Missouri. It was the height of The Great Depression,Franklin D. Roosevelt was President, the song "Paper Moon" was popular at the time and Moses Pray,(Ryan O'Neal,) and Addie,(Tatum,) are rather desperate. It was Produced and Directed by Peter Bogdanovich who was nominated for Best Director for "The Last Picture Show" in 1971,(William Friedkin won for "The French Connection.") The late, great Cloris Leachman won an "Oscar" for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Last Picture Show" and that movie made a then unknown Jeff Bridges a star. "Paper Moon" was based on a novel called "Addie Pray" and the screenplay was written by the late, great Alvin Sargent who won the "Oscar" for Best Screenplay for "Julia" in 1977 and Robert Redford's excellent "Ordinary People" in 1980. He also co-wrote the scripts for the entertaining and box-office blockbusters "Spider-Man" from 2002 ,Spider-Man 2 from 2004 and Spider-Man 3 from 2007 and many others over his long career. The late, great Madeline Kahn was nominated for the "Oscar" for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Moses new girlfriend Trixie Delight. She was delightful as usual. The movie was filmed in Black and White for atmosphere and the cinematography for supervised by Boganovich's friend, the late, great Orson Welles. And, Tatum O'Neal won the "Oscar" for Best Supporting Actress. And, she was only 9 years old. The youngest to ever win one and still is. (She won over 12 year old Linda Blair in "The Exorcist" that year.) Shirley Temple won an honorary "Oscar" back in the '30's when she was 5 but wasn't really official. Madeline Kahn said Tatum O'Neal should have one for Best Actress and not Best Supporting Actress ! A tagline for the movie poster read.....P.T. Barnum said "There 's a sucker born every minute." Hugh Jackman played P.T. Barnum in "The Greatest Showman" in 2017. I didn't see that flick.

Well deserved Oscar
Tatum O'Neal was amazing. I see why she won the Academy Award for Supporting Actress. The script was adorable. Ryan O'Neal was perfect. Bittersweet seeing daughter and father struggle with their relationship on screen knowing it was even more difficult in real life.

Good Watching
A story of an orphan girl aged about 9 (Played by Tatum O'Neal), who becomes the sidekick of a bible-selling con man, played by her father, Ryan O'Neal). It was somewhat controversial when it was first released because the child was portrayed as a minor crook, who also smoked cigarettes and resorted occasionally to alcohol and bad language. Nonetheless it is a well produced and well acted film that all the family can watch - despite the portrayal by Tatum O'Neal
