The Underwater Welder

Good but not 5 star.
This is a perfectly good story, well told and drawn. However after reading all the gushing 5 star reviews here I think maybe I was expecting something incredible. I love the cover illustrations with muted grey’s, greens and rust colours but was a little disappointed that inside is just black and white. Not to detract from the fact that I admire Lemire’s style but if Amazon put a couple of pictures from the inside of the book rather than just the cover I would have been prepared. The story follows Jack, the underwater welder of the title and his subconscious fears. Will he repeat his own parents mistakes now he has a child of his own on the way and was he partially responsible for his father’s disappearance? There are some supernatural twists that move the plot along but don’t expect a ghost story, this is ultimately about the real world with fleshed out characters and real emotions. Not the best graphic novel I have ever read but good enough that I will be checking out some of Lemire’s other work in the future.

Good introductory Lemire story
If you’re wanting to start all things Sweet Tooth and Descender, this is not a bad place to start.Lemire has a very cinematic way of displaying panels. He’s considered to be economical with words like many Writer/Artists. But I would also suggest he’s economical with the art, too. Not just in a “he doesn’t show detail when it’s not needed” way but also in that every page feels very much a part of the whole tale. He’s quick to read and leaves a lasting impression.I don’t think this is Lemire at his best but I have no doubt that I’ll be coming back to the very human story that is The Underwater Welder.

I really wanted to like this comic
When I read some reviews comparing this comic with "The Twilight Zone", I was thrilled, I need it to read it.I expected: a mesmerising and strange premise, compelling and lovable characters, and an unexpected and satisfactory conclusion.BUT, in my opinion, the story delivers...- A quite hackneyed sci-fi premise for a fan of the genre;- Lovable characters whom, after a while, I got tired (I feel that my initial sympathies towards the main character went away at a certain point due to a feeling of repetition);- And a quite foreseeable ending. It's a human story, and I am sure it can be touching for lots of people. Also, the setting is quite appeling. However, in my case, I wish it had a more original plot and a more active character.Maybe it's a story for somebody who precisely has not seen "The Twilight Zone" yet. Not my cup of tea.

Amazing story
I started to read this late at night, just wanted to read first few pages, but I could not stop and read it all immediately. Lemire is amazing at writing human feelings and relationships with a bit of a fantasy/sci-fi twist.

Emotional insightful and I couldn't put it down.
Emotional insightful and I couldn't put it down. The way it's drawn really drives home the darkness and loneliness the character feels
