Organ Music for Manuals Only: 33 Works by Berlioz, Bizet, Franck, Saint-Saens and Others (Dover Music for Organ)

Perfect collection for service music or recital selections.
I like this series of a selection by varying composer's as it brings a variety of themes and versatility for both device and recital uses. Some are more difficult than others, but that brings challenge to the organist to improve and expand to the repertoire.

poor printing quality brings it down
Several pieces worth pursuing in this collection. However, the majority of the book exhibits poor printing, using old editions (as Dover tends to do) that are sometimes just difficult to read. These should have been reset, and not just lifted from old editions.

Very Good Selection, But Very Advanced: Better for Large Liturgical Churches
I play organ in two churches, and I wanted to expand my repetoire. This manuals only book has an excellent selection of composers and types of music, but I do NOT recommend it to organists who are looking for simple pieces,-or organists who play in small or contemporary type congregations. These pieces are advanced, and they require solid keyboard technique. They are also better suited to traditional, liturgical churches because they are purely classical. There are no familiar hymns or melodies that everyone will recognize. An excellent anthology for those who can utilize it.

Great Compilation!
Bought this for my home-town church organist upon the recommendation of my hubby (who is also an organist), because he mentioned wanting to put more classical music "back into his fingers". He plays really gorgeous preludes and postludes at mass now, and says that he loves the variety of music to practice with. My husband told me that even though the books says "manuals only" it is not exactly so. He said that there are plenty of moments for pedal play within the pieces, but that the broad focus is on playing manuals. I hope I explained that right? (I am clearly no organist, but it made a great gift and I love hearing the pieces played at church).

Not great, not bad,
Adequate selection, but not super usable in a church setting.

Chase the Successor
Purchased as a partner to Smith's second Volume "A Treasury of Organ Music F.M.O." The scan/print production is of variable quality and clarity. Bizet and Lemmens suffer. The Mozart K616 has eight lines crammed on a page making the demi-semiquvers difficult for my old eyes. (The version in Petrucci is a great improvement). I found the content to be less stimulating than in the successor volume, but that is a subjective comment. It is a useful addition to my library, but not a treasure.

Very useful.
I was asked to play an organ with a virtually unusable pedalboard and looked for manuals only music. This is a good selection ofnot very well-known pieces mostly by famous composers. They are very useful but not always very inspiring, nevertheless I award it a 4 star rating.
