Bloomsbury Ocean Meets Sky

Transcendental, magic tale of loss
It's Finn's Grandpa's birthday. He would have been ninety if he was still around, and in his honour, Finn builds a boat for a journey they had planned together. Tired from the building, he falls asleep and wakes on the ocean under clouds shaped like a pipe, an anchor and a whale. Feeling lonely, Finn notices a huge golden fish with whiskers reminiscent of his grandfather's. Together they head off in search of a place where the ocean meets the sky. What follows is mystical and transcendental, with magical full spread illustrations. Finn and the fish visit the Library Islands where birds wear top hats, an island of truly giant shells, a sea full of dancing jellyfish, and then they are there. Whales, ships, hot air balloons... It is truly a place of wonder and awe. Finn sees his grandpa in the moon and manages to say goodbye before a voice calls him from the distance and he wakes up in his boat in the garden just in time to have grandpa's dumplings for tea. This is a gorgeous, fantastical story of the enduring bond of a child and his grandfather and a dreamy glimpse of what might lay beyond.

A touching story, richly and beautifully illustrated
Finn is a little boy who lives with his mother in a house by the sea. On his late grandfather's birthday he builds a boat, falls asleep and when he awakes, he finds himself on a magical journey to a place his grandfather had told him of: the place where ocean meets sky. Each stage of the journey is beautifully illustrated in serene, glowing colours, full of detail and delight. For younger readers this story is a charming bedtime fable which rewards repeated readings. For older children it is a touching meditation on memory, bereavement and love.

It’s a good day for sailing
A wonderful story that shares the missing of a loved one beautifully. The illustrations were cleverly drawn and it was wonderful to look back and find Grandpa’s treasured possessions , espcially Grandpa’s hat. This will make a fantastic text to add to our ‘Journey of Life’ topic in PSHE - a gentle and beautiful way to start what can be a difficult conversation.

A really lovely story to read with a child who has recently lost a grandparent. The kids love it and it is a food way to remember them.
