The New Encyclopedia of Jewelry-Making Techniques

A little dissappointed.
I need what I was buying because I first took it out the library repeatedly. I wanted more then metal clay and a least 25% more polymer clay yet thats ok. It has all the necessary information needed for all other types and findings and closures etc.

Very informative about current techniques. I didn't buy it with actually creating jewelry in mind.
After going through the books at the library to find jewelry books to help my girlfriend understand about jewelry so she could make more informed choices when making purchases we settled on this book and 3 or 4 others. If you look up my reviews you'll see what else she chose. We did look through a lot of books to find and purchase the ones we did. But it was not to make jewelry mind you, just to make the most informed decisions about purchasing various pieces and also what struck us as interesting. This book is very well done for our purposes according to my girlfriend.

New Encyclopedia- only for beginners.
If you are very very very new to the world of metalsmithing, this would be a great book. It covers a lot of elementary techniques that would be fantastic for a beginner. It covers step-by-step how to complete many important methods of joining and finishing metal. If you own Complete Metalsmith by McCreight, you do not need this book. If you've been smithing for a few years and are looking at this as a handy reference, you do not need this book. If you are considering starting out in metalsmithing as a hobby, this is a good book for you. If you are starting out learning how to be a metalsmith, purchase Complete Metalsmith. It covers a much wider range of topics.

5 stars...even at Christmas!
This and Jinks McGrath's other book are my 2 'go to' not only for wire wrap, but for metalsmithing in general. She is a Master. Her explanations are clear and concise. I don't feel like she is way over my head, not do I feel it is just skimming the edges of metalsmithing. The photography is EXCELLENT.The book arrived before expected, even at the top of Christmas rush! I was shocked. It was in perfect condition. If you are just a newbie to metal, this is a great starter for ALL aspects...or just a good all-round reference book.

Not up to her past work.
I bought both of the following books at the same time.(1) The Ultimate Jeweler's Guide: The Illustrated Reference of Techniques, Tools & Materials (Lark Jewelry Books) by Joanna Goldberg.(2) The New Encyclopedia of Jewelry-Making Techniques: A Comprehensive Visual Guide to Traditional and Contemporary Techniques by Jinks McGrath. Both of the books have grandiose titles (ultimate ? comprehensive?) considering what they contain. But Goldberg has four times the content and is four times as useful as McGrath.Considering some of McGrath's former work it seems like this latest book was ghost written by someone who had no idea what information was valuable to people trying to learn to make jewelry. Also, in McGrath, there is undefined UK jewelry terminology that is so arcane it doesn't get any hits on Google; and some of the content is so banal and obvious it seems like it was placed in the book just to fill space between the pictures. A lot of space was wasted that could have contained useful information.
