Katadyn makes a great filter, and these discs help to keep the filter media clean from debris. It's important to realize that filtering water with sediment will dramatically cut the life of the filter, because this unit (the Vario) is actually a PURIFIER. Now I've used it to clean some really nasty water, and it worked great. When you're out on the trail, sometimes that is your only option. But doing so kills the filter. This "pre-filter" ceramic disc is cleaned with a green scrub pad (or when mine got really bad I used steel wool). This is simply a replacement for the stock piece, and works great.
