The hay openings are wider than on most other hay hoppers which allow the animal to get at the hay easier. The guinea pigs can't seem to get at the hay if the bars or openings are too close together. Any loose hay can fall down into the dry food dish which saves it from being wasted. What I don't like is that this newer model has a wire door that closes the top opening of the hay hopper. Our guinea pigs like to stand up and pull hay out from the top and they can't with this "door" so I've removed the wire type bars that hold the hay in so they have easier access to the hay. That defeats the purpose to some extent, but it still works. Hopefully the Quick Locks on the newer model don't break like the one we bought before this one. So far they appear stronger than older models and are holding up nicely. I have it sitting on the floor of the cage with the Quick Locks attached to the cage wires to keep it in place as otherwise the piggies will move it around. To me this saves space in the cage having a dry food "dish" in the same unit as the hay hopper. I do recommend this product and will buy it again if this one ever needs to be replaced! I stuff the hay in all the way to the top and then put pellets in the bottom. Some of the hay will drop into the pellet area (especially when the hay is toward the bottom of the bag and has smaller pieces). I have two pigs so I have a separate pellet container as well, but I'm sure they can figure out there are pellets under the hay that has fallen. The hooks work very well on my C&C cage, and my pigs have never once tried to crawl into the hay bin. I bought this because of all the good reviews I read on it, and it is well worth the money.
