Q: What is supporting the table when it's angled? Is there a locking mechanism or is there a stick or something there physically supporting it?

There is a metal mechanism that bolts to the underside of the table and to the back frame of the desk. It's a ratchet mechanism. Tilt up a bit until you hear a click and then it will hold. Tilt more, click, hold. To release it to flat, tilt the surface all the way up and the mechanism releases to allow the surface to return to the flat position.

Q: What is table top made of. Sometimes paper needs to be taped down with wet tape

The table is pressed wood, I suspect, but covered with a thick melamine-type coating. I use it for painting as well and it is completely waterproof and paint and pen marks scrub off fine. Doesn’t appear to scratch either. Quite durable.

Q: what is the actual height? because I believe the height listed is compeltely wrong.

It’s smooth. It’s like a big sticker over particle board. Pretty durable.
