Excellent Region Free Player!
This is my second XDE600. I bought one from B&H 2 years ago & I use it so much that before I wear it out I decided to buy another before they're gone from the marketplace. The picture is as close to HD as you can get without actually being HD. It's connected to a 50" Panasonic & also to a Panasonic DVD recorder. It doesn't have a ton of features but it's fine for my modest needs. The box said region 3 so I was prepared to perform the region fix mentioned by other reviewers but there was no need. It came with a plug adapter & a HDMI cable & worked fine right out of the box. Flawlessly plays everything I've thrown at it. Region 1 & 2 store bought DVD's plus a varity of home recorded movies & concerts. It's not the sturdiest machine but it's no worse than anything else in this price range. The one I bought from B&H also said region 3 on the box & it too worked fine right out of the box.The quality of DVD players & recorders today seems to be getting worse instead of better. I've had 2 good years with my current XDE600 & it's still going strong. I'm glad I got another one before they're gone.

Does the primary job great - others rough around the edges
I bought this one on a whim just to try out the extended detail enhancement feature. Of the three (Sharp, Color, Contrast) Sharp worked very well. I have a properly calibrated set, so the other two were pretty much of no use. On newer films Sharp added just the right amount of sharpness to scenes without additional halos or other edge enhancement artifacts (the better the film's cinematography the better it works). With older 4:3 aspect films or non-HD TV shows from the 90s the image is stretch and there is nothing I can do to fix it. My Vizio TV can't adjust for it (it just sees a 1080P image coming from the player and keeps it in its "normal" state - stretched in other words) and neither can the player. That's pretty frustrating and I may end up sending this back for that reason. Need to take stock of how many DVDs I rent that are 4:3. The audio is good/average. Nothing to write home about, but perfectly acceptable. The build quality of the unit is very light. The case of the player feels like a tin can and the remote is as tiny and lightweight as a child's toy. The buttons are very small and unintuitive.Again, for what its basic purpose is (DVD upscaled playback), it does a great job on 16:9 widescreen material, particularly with Sharp enabled. The image quality rivals at times the Oppo DV-980H (no joke) and is slightly better than the Pioneer Elite DV-49AV. I wished Toshiba had chosen to put the XDE feature into a more quality player from a feature and build standpoint. It would have a real winner then - even at another say, $50 for that quality.Edit: Well, after a week or so of ownership I feel I was a bit too harsh on the XDE-600, so I bumped the rating up to four stars. The image quality is so good for the low price that I can overlook the deficiencies. Plus I found a work-around of sorts for the 4:3 aspect problem. Set the HDMI resolution to 480p in the player and it will display in the proper aspect ratio on the TV. The only snag is that the XDE settings won't work in anything but 1080p, but since they are mostly older movies (that use that format) I can live with it.

I can't say anything nice about the player
This is the worst dvd player I have ever used. If you use the HDMI out your aspect ratios are wrong and you can't change them on the unit or the TV. With the composite video out full frame dvds play right but all the other aspect ratios are wrong and again can't be corrected with the unit. I've never had another dvd player this bad, all my other players display aspect ratios properly. Sadly, I didn't hook up the turkey and discover it's limitations until after I could return it. This is just one of the many problem this player has. I have a Toshiba recorder that works just fine so I can't understand why this one is a piece of cr#p.

good player, problem with "region free"
Very nice player. The height is fairly small, making it a nice addition for a small video system. My only real complaint (so far) is that that player does not seemto be "region free" per the Amazon description and the sticker on the outside of the box. When I read the manual, the manual indicates "region 3".When I tried to play a Psych DVD, the player said "incorrect region".YIKES!!After a little internet surfing, I found an unlock code. For a consumer, this is completely unacceptable, and a knock down of TWO stars.I originally thought that I was going to have to send the unit back to Amazon. The item description and the box indicates that the unit should be region free, but the actual unit appears to be programmed for region 3.I would have NEVER purchased the player knowing that it was a region 3 player. This seems to be a manufacturing issue. The manual says "region 3".The box says "region free".The out-of-the-box player does not play "region 1" DVDs.

If you need region free DVD, buy this
This DVD player is a basic no frills unit but performs its job well dealing with muliti-region DVD discs that I own from Europe, the Far East and of course the USA. It comes with a European two pin round plug and you either have to get an adapter or change the plug for use in the USA but it works off 110 volts to 230 volts and 50/60 Hz so its compatible for use in the USA. DVD players have the NTSC or PAL output option either HDMI of RCA but I've never experienced a problem viewing Region 1 discs (USA) in Europe or region 2 discs (Europe) in the USA. Good value for money for those owning DVDs from different regions of the world (Not Bluray).

Given as a gift to my brother so he could benefit from all my Region 2 DVD collection. From his reports, works exactly as advertised.

I don't know if it was like that when I rec'd it
Machine works well as expected. However unfortunately the USB port got pushed in without me using it, I don't know if it was like that when I rec'd it.I was at the time quite busy, I still am ... and so I did not return it when I should have.Happily, I haven't needed that port.
