Top of the line vocal microphone.. period.
AKG - what can I say. This is top shelf and nothing below. The transducer has a built-in buffer under the generous sized outer mesh cover (which also has a light wind-sock built in to it) For those unexpected pops that can destroy speakers, this has a flexible cone (think of the movement of a speaker cone as it flexes with the bass beats) and absorbs sound pops from those who "need to be heard" - while speaking into it. It is more of a high-impedance mic but does not have a switch to click into a lower impedance if needed. I am sure this is by design. I have found that keeping the master volume level down to half or slightly over is the perfect setting on a mixer. The sound produced from this model (D5S) is crystal clear and also helps to absorb annoying highs where clear treble frequencies can be lost. It is a solid build with all metal construction and the switch is soft and on-point every time (ie: no excess movement). Combine this model with a high-quality oxygen-free, lossless cable and you've got a winner. Just keep the mic at least 5 to 6 feet away from your closest speaker, otherwise you may get that terrible feedback squeel if your mic volume is turned up just a bit much. Speaking a touch louder and clear into the mic will cover the loss of volume on a mixer's microphone volume knob. Top quality and a good warranty too. Definitely purchase this for a wired mic. They sound so much better than anything I've owned by other top manufacturers. Great service from Japan too. Arrived in Canada on my doorstep in 4 days from the original order. Just don't send to a P.O box or you've got troubles in shipping. Send to a physical numbered address or use Amazon's pickup location service. But wow, way to go with this one AKG. I will be buying your products again.

Great Mic
Excellent Mic, I made the switch from Shure SM58 two years ago having used one at a larger gig with a hired PA company. It made my voice sound warmer, more rounded! The sound engineer had an SM58 set up for me originally, but my voice sounded a bit nasal & Honky? He changed the mic to an AKG D5 and the difference was amazing, so much so that I went out the next day & bought one. I play with a number of Bands, mainly playing drums & singing backing vocals, I found an immediate difference when we used our own PA. The only Problem was I was getting a lot of spill from the kit especially when I moved the mic away for numbers I did not sing on. So the ideal solution was to get a D5 with a switch! So far it is perfect! I'm not saying the D5 is a better mic than the SM58, I am saying that the D5 is a better mic for me, it is more suited to my voice. If you are looking for a mic then definitely check out the AKG D5! The D5S is exactly the same but with a switch. They are a little harder to find, so when I saw one on-line I didn't hesitate I ordered it straight away from Amazon, it arrived 2 days later. Excellent service from Amazon as per usual. Great Price (a lot cheaper than the SM58)! Excellent Mic!!! PS Since I made the change to the D5, 2 other members of the Band have done the same thing, we are all very happy with the D5(s)!

A worthy successor to the Shure SM58.
I've used the Shure SM58 for over 50-years, but decided to give one of these a test run. Here are my comments. First, it definitely has more clarity on the top end than the Shure, plus a little more gain. So it's great for being heard when singing with tracks or a band. But a with few simple adjustments the Shure makes them nearly identical in this regard. Second, It's heavier than the Shure, nearly identical to the Sennheiser e945 in weight. Third, it feeds back much more than the Shure. Shure is the best mic I've ever used for feedback suppression. And fourth, I bought the one with the On/Off switch, just like my Shure. I find it extremely handy when you don't want a hot mic around to pickup extraneous noise. I think I'll probably be using them interchangeably for live performances.
