I gave this a five star rating because it works as advertised, which is a three to four inch depth, within a rather small radius, giving a fairly loud audible alert when something is detected. I ordered it along with a full-sized professional type detector, thinking I would keep the small 9 inch unit in my carry-around tool kit, to find fasteners I dropped in the grass. As it turns out, it does an excellent job at that, since although well-hidden in the grass, the nut, bolt or screw is on the surface. I actually tried to find a ¼-20 nut I dropped while looking the other way, and recovered it in less than a minute. I wish I had all the minutes I spent looking for a dark-colored fastener in 4 inch grass because I was too lazy to put down a tarp before commencing work, and then driving to the hardware because I never found the fastener.

I bought this thinking it could go under water, must've read it on a different product! So that was my bad! Other than that, it works great.

The metal detector is NOT very sensitive, a person has to be within 2-3 inches before it detects any metal it unless it's a very big piece of metal. Having said that, IF you have a use for something like that and will work for you, the price is relatively low. I ordered it to find brass that is kicked out semi-auto guns that can fall in various places in short grass. If you know the vicinity (within a few feet) then it will work by laying it down and sweeping back and forth to get a beep then vertical to pinpoint it. However, that can be time consuming because a person needs to cover every inch of ground thoroughly. To bad it can't detect over a wider range but it is not cumbersome and is easy to use/carry so for $20 it seems to work for me. Not for serious metal detecting tho.
