This is a handcrafted king-size platform bed made of European Beech (no veneers) with inlaid Purple Heart and Zebra woods. The beech is finished with a black dye overlaid with a mahogany stain and top coated with several coats of satin polyurethane yielding a deep expresso color. The bed support structure is made of laminated 1 1/2 inch thick Luan plywood. All edges of the support structure are trimmed in beech. The bed is designed to minimize the visibility of the support structure while maintaining excellent stability, hence the "floating" appearance in a typical bedroom setting. This bed is designed for a king size mattress, box springs are not necessary. A 6 to 8 inch high-density foam or latex mattress would be ideal. The bed with a 7" foam mattress is shown in the first image. Note that support slats for the mattress are not shown in the other images so that the details of the support structure are clearly visible. The side decks are 6 Inches wide and 3.5 inches deep. They are made of 3/4 inch beech wood laminated over a core of mixed hardwoods to maximize stability of these long structural members. The decks are joined with mitre joints at the foot of the bed using a combination of dowels and zipbolts to align and pull the joints tightly together. This "knockdown" construction facilitates easy moving and reassembly. The top of the side decks sit about 15 inches above the floor with the bottom of the mattress recessed 2.5 inches below the deck top. Thus the top of an 8 inch mattress will be about 5.5 inches above the side decks. The entire headboard structure is angled back at 12 degrees to the bed decks and secured to the decks with a combination of hex bolts, screw inserts and barrel screws.
