I have been collecting books about tattoos long before tattooing became so popular. In those days there were only a few books on the subject and no magazines. Now there ar dozens maybe hundreds. Some good but a lot not so good.I read about this book in a British tattoo magazine and it had a very good review and was highly recommended. Based on this I ordered the book but because of the high price I had an attack of buyers remorse and cancelled the order. A day later after considerable thought I reordered it.First it is an enormous book in size and weight this almost works against it. The illustrations and art work is superb. The text is well written and interesting. There are a couple of errors but not of significance. Reading it is a pleasure even if you have to do it while lying on the floor. Not surprisingly European artists are in predominance with good coverage on George Burchett and some other early British tattoo artists.According to the title of the book it records the history of tattooing up until the 1970’s. So most of the current artists are excluded from the book. I was surprised not to find much mention of Sailor Jerry who was alive and working during that time.I would have like it if there had been an index .Only time will tell if this will become a collectible. This first edition was published with a limited number and each copy has a serial number. I looked around to find the cheapest price which was from Amazon.It is a great book and I am glad that I decided to buy it.

GORGEOUS book with large, high-resolution photos of an incredible personal collection/archive. Heavy, huge, and filled with photos, flash, Schiffmacher’s engravings and art—worth the hefty price. (This is not the same book as Schiffmacher’s tattoo encyclopedia, FYI, which is also great.) The custom box is great—but a sleeve would’ve been better/more appreciated.

I bought this book for my fiancé on Valentine’s Day to celebrate her new role as a tattoo apprentice, which for her is a dream come true. Each book is numbered and we got copy 1128, which also just happens to be our anniversary (11/28). You simply can’t put a price on inspiration, but in this case it’s worth every penny.

This is a phenomenal book. It was just was what I was looking for. A history of different cultures including British and American. If you are looking for some type of bright new back piece ideas this book really is not for you. it’s beautifully presented including the chapter pages which are gold. Okay, I knew the dimensions before, however once you open the box you’ll realize how big it really is! Tattooed or not it’s a stunning history of the art!

I've easily paid triple for books that aren't nearly as good as this one.

=) Loved every part of opening reading and looking at this book, truly beautiful!! I recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn more about tattoo history. The way the book as bound and feels in your hand is amazing it is a huge book with past seen photos that are now at full page size. A great book to add to any collection!!

What a beautiful, in-depth book of tattoo history. I bought this as a gift for my significant other, and he absolutely loves it. He’s had his eye on it for a while, and was surprised to receive this for Christmas. The book is MASSIVE - it would never fit on a regular bookshelf, it also weighs 15+ lbs. It’s a true work of art.
