Everglades (A Doc Ford Novel)
R**T
Owen Wister is Rolling Over in His Grave
Everglades starts out well: fast, intriguing, etc., but flags about two-thirds into the novel.White needs to dispense with Dewey Nye who serves absolutely no purpose in any of his of Fordseries novels. Beyond the dull, repetitive escapades with Dewey, Everglades moves at a brisk pace, complemented by some interesting history of the Seminole tribes and Everglades. Again, however,in typical formulaic pattern (yes, I realize this is part of the genre), Doc solves the crimes and misdeedsof the malefactors in the last two pages, and, as before, winds up in a tropical paradise with the dullDewey Nye. Shark River and Twelve Mile Limit have more meat to them (even if Doc is in prime physicalshape in these two precursors) than Everglades. I always start my summer with a Randy W. White Doc Fordnovel. May have to change my own formulaic pattern next summer. BTW, met White at a writers' conference.Very entertaining, knowledgeable guy.

Canโt wait for the next one!
Randy Wayne Whiteโs stories are interconnected so reading them in order will give the reader perspective. However, if thry are not read in order, there is enough redundancy for the reader to understand the backgrounds of the characters. Enjoy the Doc Ford series!

RRW novels are being devoured by my husband
I bought my husband a couple of Randy Wayne White novels because we were going on a mini vacation to Sanibel Island, FL and had plans to eat at Doc Fords while there. He didn't read them before the trip because he was in the middle of another large book. But upon his return, he read the 1st 2 I got him at lightning speed, and then went out of town. When he returned, he found a stack of ten or so, and proceeded to go through them rather quickly too. Then he went out of ton again so I got him another stack. He has slowed a little bit, but still glued to them. He says their is a little bit of repetitive set-up in each one because it has returning characters, and this is to be expected in serial novels. Over all though, the more he reads, the more he seems to be enjoying them. I don't guess it really matters which one you start with and which order you go in. Anyway, he loves fishing and the water, so I figured these would be his cup of tea. A few years back I got him Linda Greenlaw's books and he love those so much, he reread them several times. She writes a different kind of novel, but the fishing and sea thread is there and tha's all it takes to get him "hooked".

I love it
Without a doubt a pleasurable experience. As a Southeast Florida resident I particularly enjoy the technical and historical information as well as the superb and clever story development. Wish I could find the specific locations to share in the camaraderie. Purely enjoyable author.

a great summer read
Randy Wayne White's latest Doc Ford novel is equal parts psychological thriller, south Florida tarvelogue, and action novella. The perfect summer read. In Everglades, Doc Ford wrestles with his personal failures while finding an old friend in trouble with a New Age spiritualist. The story soon involves Ford's deep-thinking (and heavily spaced out) friend Tomlinson, who has had encounters of his own with the villian.White is really maturing as a writer, as this book demonstrates. His characters have a greater degree of depth, and his narrative flows between sequences flawlessly. Of course, as one would expect from a RWW novel, he has much to say about his beloved south Florida and life in general as he does about the story line. A strength of this book is that these points only ehance the plot rather than detract from it. The only sticky point about the book is that the nature of the sub-plot requires readers to have read at least the previous book, Twelve Mile Limit in order to clearly understand whats going on. Nonetheless, a recommended read.

Steady Entertainment from Doc Ford
Doc Ford is one of my favorite reads and Everglades did not disappoint. It wasn't White's best effort but then he does set the bar very high for himself and for Doc Ford. There were a few plot choices late in the book that I would have avoided. I don't like killing off well-developed characters that can be an asset to a later read but White makes the tough choices. A few of the scenes outcomes were forced for convenience and I would have enjoyed more build-up of detail and drama before arriving at the same result. That said White has never let me down on a read. I would recommend this book but i you have not yet read Doc Ford I would steer you to book one. If you like it continue reading the series. That's how I became a fan and I feel like I know how Ford became the man he is in Everglades.
