Terra Nova: Season 1

Excellent series
Terra Nova is more than a sifi series. When is the last time you saw a show with a traditional family? I mean a father, mother and children in the traditional sense? And with other traditional families too? A show that is not trying to promote alternant lifestyles or political agendas? A show like that is extreamly rare. Terra Nova is a sifi series, but it is also a good halesome show without F-bombs falling all over the place or raunchy, steamy soft porn sex scenes taking up time that could be spent on something worthwhile or excessive violence with blood and guts in excessive amounts. The story line is very good, the actors are talented, the special effects are excellent and the producers have done a great job. I love the show.

A very GOOD series. Couldn't live up to the hype/expectations.
Mentioning Steven Spielberg (Executive Producer) and a plot featuring dinosaurs conjures up visions of a weekly Jurassic Park. Add Executive Producers David Fury (LOST, 24) and Brannon Braga (Star Trek, 24) and expectations go through the roof. This isn't a bad series. In fact, it's a very GOOD series. Unfortunately, it simply couldn't live up to expectations. Initial reviews were positive and hopeful, however the slant was understandably always toward the expectation of special effects featuring dinosaurs. While the series did feature a good amount of passable dinosaur effects, its focus was more toward plot and character progression rather than effects and action. Not every episode is a winner but the characters are likable and the plot sustains interest. I liked this series. It definitely deserved a second season. At $8-$10 this DVD is well worth it. The season finale ties up enough loose ends to offer some closure. But, you'll be left wanting more and pondering the possibilities of what could have been.

One season? Really?
Just picked up this DVD series and started watching it. I can tell already, I'm going to be ticked that it's only one season. When you consider all the junk shows on the air, this is one that should have stayed.

my very favorite series
. I've watched it dozens of times and used it for background sound as I work on jigsaw puzzles and such. This mini series is a positive feel good sci fi movie produced by Steven Spielberg in Australia. the relationships are endearing and the plots are fun. I really wish they had continued making seasons of this show.

Sad the Series Ended
Terra Nova was a very innovative TV series in which people from a polluted Earth travel , not into space, but back into the past. There are several scenes that stand out in my memory. One was murder by raptor. Go ahead. Think about that for a minute! At the very end of the series some of the people make a trip to the Badlands and find the ruins of three ships. If memory serves they were the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Maybe they ended the series because how do you explain that?! The show may have failed because the writers kept changing. I still enjoyed it.

They play fine. The series starts off well
The discs come in a plastic snap case. They play fine. The series starts off well, good science fiction special effects and great Australian scenery, but the story arc and the characters are as dumb as a box of rocks. Instead of watching Terra Nova (2011) I’d recommend watching something else. Here are a few of the series I really enjoyed watching more than once: Band of Brothers (2001), Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Black Sails (2014-2017), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Downton Abbey (2010-2015), Firefly (2002), Game of Thrones (2011-2019), The IT Crowd (2006-2013), Jericho (2006-2008), Lonesome Dove (1989), Lost (2004-2010), Merlin (2008-2012), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Rome (2005-2007), Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011), Stargate: SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate: Atlantis (2004-2009), Star Trek The Original Series (1966-1969) and Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001). I didn’t list any contemporary series I’m following that don’t have an end date yet, not conducive to binge watching from beginning to finish, or the hundreds of other fantasy and science fiction shows I’ve watched. If you like reading try some of my favorite authors: Richard Adams, Palo Bacigulupi, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.

This was a series that was cancelled just as it seemed to be finding its voice; a shame, really, but so typical of FOX. The premise was one of the most genuinely unique to come along in television in a long time and I can't help thinking it would have gotten better as it matured. The writing was, in spite of a couple of stumbles, above par, and the casting and performances were excellent. The lone exception was Jason O'Mara who couldn't seem to decide whether he wanted to imitate Sylvester Stallone or Mel Gibson.FOX seems to have a questionable habit of pulling the trigger too soon on series that take a while to get their bearings ("Firefly" readily comes to mind) and I think they may have acted prematurely with "Terra Nova." That being said, the first (only) season of "Terra Nova" is worthy of inclusion in any collection of Science Fiction video. While it has an ending that leaves the viewer wondering what will happen and wanting more, it is an ending that is worthy of the genre of speculative fiction. I regret the series was cancelled but I don't regret having this set in my permanent collection.

Dinosaurs, Time Travel, A New Start for the Human Race oh boy!
I Loved the Premise. Human kind has polluted the earth, A select few are allowed to go back in time in a Different Time Line, so their actions do Not effect the future. There are those who don't want this to happen, the collective Bad Guys. Overall the story line is Good. The Studio, or who ever wanted to cut it short and it is hurried at the end. That is why I give it a rating of 4 stars. You wouldn't catch me leaving the compound at night. Something Different and enjoyable to watch, This is the Entire series.

An underachieving show that proves big budget can't carry poor stories
Terra Nova promises to be a good idea for a show at the start, but ultimately never rises above being average. This is mainly due to a lack of focus. What I mean by that is the show is trying to be a survival drama, a family show and a sci-fi, yet falling short on all three fronts due to weak writing. From the start, there's never any real sense that they're in a world requiring an urgency to survive or to adapt to a hostile environment. Their base is built and they've all got an endless supply of hi-tech equipment from the start. This becomes more nonsensical in the stories where the tech inevitably breaks down and they wonder why they're in the... without a clue. Even the first season of The 100 did a far better job.The main family are amicable and decently acted. But they are a bit generic and don't really have the spark to make the stories interesting. The rest of the cast are okay, but again no standout characters except one. I think they would have been in real trouble had they not cast Stephen Lang as Commander Taylor. The sets are good though and even the dinosaurs are too, despite looking a bit rubbery by today's standards. Apparently, this blew their budget though, which may partially explain the weak writing, which in turn inevitably led to dropped ratings then the show's cancellation after one season. The main question now is does this work as a standalone season to watch? Ironically, because the writing is so limited the answer is yes. There aren't many loose ends and, while the ending does hint at a second season, it finishes at a satisfactory point for an average show.

Mixed but good value.
A soapish version of Jurassic Park. Certainly family viewing sometimes bordering on the insipidly sweet but children of a certain age will lap it up (as well as some of us grownups!).Largely British and Australian actors with the odd American thrown in and filmed in Australia ----- why is it I'm thinking of 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' ?English language and English subtitles. Loads of bonus features which are fun.

Terra Nova - Deserves better than it got
This Series has so much to offer. It is a shame that it got cancelled. The general overview of Terra Nova is mankind has poisoned the earth and are dying out with no hope of surviving. So they send people back to the age of dinosaurs to start a new beginning and give mankind a hope of surviving. Terra Nova follows the Shannon family, and how they cope with the world around them and the dangers that are out there. Terra Nova probable would of done alot better than it did if they released it during the summer when all the bigger shows such as "The Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad" were not being aired. But due it being released fall time it had to compete with already popular shows and it couldnt. Its a shame really, as this has so much potential and is an enjoyable series to watch. A second season would of been a huge hit and would have been successful as everything is set up nicely from the first. I guess we can only wish as a second season is not going to happen. Recommend this series if your into dinosaurs or want something different yet still good to watch.

What film were they making?
It's often enlightening to read others' reviews. The divergence of opinion, I feel, exemplifies that the creators hadn't decided? weren't allowed to decide? what film they were making. So, it sits uneasily between three genres: a family film, an action film and a film that poses interesting questions. And because there was no decision, major potential audiences fall away and give one star reviews, because none of these are developed in any depth - side from the fundamental that the scenario is artifical and treated, as others have noted, with lashings of Disney syrup. You experience stock shallow characters and characterisations, beautiful frontier homes where everything unfailingly works and some formulaic story lines. It looks great, but that doesn't make up for no tension.

By far the best part is the extras at the end of the first disc on how they made it. Almost worth skipping straight to the end! The set is impressive, the CGI is OK, the dinos are a bit plastic, and as ever, everyone either mumbles or talks too fast. Father and son both come over as stupid, and I can hardly catch a word the elder daughter says because she talks so fast, and how father escaped from jail is a complete blur. Having watched the first disc and knowing now how they made it, I expect the rest of the episodes to be much more interesting. Jurassic Park it is not, but harmless entertainment - if you can stomach the irritating characters!
